As a behavioral health nurse care coordinator, Meggan Kohel connects, supports and advocates for patients who struggle with an opioid use disorder. Meggan works with parents to reunite them with their children, assists them in navigating complicated health care systems, and helps them secure employment, therapy and housing. A colleague of Meggan's had this to say: “It can be challenging to get patients seen at specialty care clinics for addiction treatment. Meggan created a new process that allows RNs to identify and schedule new patients for a special program that helps connect them to the care they need. This solution has resulted in a more efficient process for team members and improved access for patients. Meggan’s dedication and respect is evident in the connections she fosters with her patients and the level of trust she has with them. She has made an undeniable impact on patients and families, and patients often express what a difference she is making in their lives and recovery.” Meggan received a 2024 Nurse Excellence Award because of her exceptional contributions to patient- and family-centered care, and the support she provides to nurses and other care team members.

Addiction is a vital field to learn about, regardless of career plans or setting for nurses, as they are likely to come across it in various healthcare environments such as hospitals or outpatient clinics. GW's primary aim is to ensure that graduating students become part of the solution rather than the problem, actively contributing to addressing addiction issues in their practice. Throughout my journey as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I have learned to give myself much more grace than I did as a new grad and novice provider. When appointments end with a patient becoming upset, unhappy with care and/or disappointed in their treatment. I take the time (sometimes not until the end of the day or end of the week) to reflect back on the situation and try to consider all perspectives. I ask myself, “were there actions somewhere in the process that were more harmful than helpful? Did I re-traumatize inadvertently?” I understand that some days “clinic life comes as you fast”, and that in my humanness I could have negative impacted an encounter without being cognizant of that fact. I understand this doesn’t make me a “bad” provider, but just a person trying to continue to improve and do better. A few things I consider: ⭐️ Was this the 3rd or 4th a client had to tell their story? ⭐️Did I offer the client an opportunity to give feedback and/or ask questions? ⭐️Did I offer choices and/options related to their treatment plan? ⭐️Was the environment culturally, emotionally and physically safe? ⭐️Was I rushing because I had fallen behind? ⭐️Is there room to repair the trust and client/provider relationship? ⭐️What ways could I improve an encounter like this in the future? I am always learning and always improving as a PMHNP, as a business owner, as a mom, as a wife and as a human being. In what ways do you reflect on less than ideal patient encounters?
