💥6-Fold Nugget of Florence Nightingale's Legacy!💥 Fun fact, perhaps😌🥂 Ever heard of Florence Nightingale, who literally birth forth Nursing🥰 This woman of valor, nurtured this legacy from the early days so well that she was called the 'Lady with the Lamp'. Reason for that title?🤭 👣She walked among the sick people's beds, checking the wounded men,mainly soldiers at the time while holding a LIGHT in her hand, amidst the night. 👣Holding firmly to that 🕯️Light 🕯️ she used as a guide; Guideline Principles have been passed down till this current era for the practice of Nursing,namely the 6 Cs of Nursing Care. You probably never knew such 6-Fold Principles in Nursing existed😃! My pleasure, to bring to Light! 💡Care: Being in a state of genuine concern. 💡Compassion: Ability to extend kindness and being able to help others out of sympathy. 💡 Competence: Entails the capability of utilizing skills, training, experience and knowledge that a person has and having the ability to apply them to execute tasks or assigned duties. (One of my favorite🤭🔥) 💡 Communication: Nursing is definitely incomplete without any form of interaction with patient/client to find out the health needs in order to render medical assistance as needed. Meet Dr Sarah Bekaert: (part 2 of 4) How long have you been in the nursing profession? 25 years this year!! What inspired your journey into nursing, and how has that inspiration evolved over time? I graduated in modern languages and my first job was in administration with an overseas relief and development organisation called TearFund. I really wanted to work in what were then termed third world contexts but realised that I didn’t have a particular skill to offer! Inspired by my mother, also a nurse, I thought I would train to be a nurse and then work abroad. I had the privile of doing my training in the East End of London – and quickly realised that I dd not need to go abroad to work with people from around the world. I stayed in Hackney for 18 years in various nursing roles – the consistent theme in all roles has been the social determinants of health and the role of the nurse in mitigating the negative consequences of constrained socio-economic and health circumstances. Over the years I have moved around the public health model in that I now want to primarily focus on the policy and legal aspects of public health care, whereas previously, in clinical roles I was working with individuals, families and communities. Do you have a pivotal experience in your nursing career that left a lasting impact, whether challenging or memorable that you would like to share? Doing the interviews with the young mothers for my PhD study. They were so open, so detailed in their accounts, had had such difficult life experiences, had found joy (as well as challenge) in motherhood, had been marginalised by societal expectations and judgements around teenage motherhood. It really brought home to me how important it is to be mindful of people’s stories and life events and how that plays out across their lives. I was then fully convinced that advocacy for teens was my direction of travel! What is the most challenging aspect about a career in nursing? No-one other than other nurses seem to fully understand what we know and what we do – which leads to woeful consequences regarding commissioning and pay, and most importantly health outcomes for populations and individuals - even with clear evidence that having registered nurses = less death in acute settings!!

"Florence Nightingale: The Trailblazer of Modern Nursing Who Emphasized Communication and Compassion" Florence Nightingale is best known as the founder of modern nursing. As a teenager, she would spend time helping the sick and poor in the village near her family estate and believed nursing was her calling. In 1844, she announced her decision to work as a nurse. She studied as a nursing student at the Kaiserwerth Deaconesses' Institute in the city of Düsseldorf. By 1860, she had used donations to establish the world’s first professional nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. Florence Nightingale emphasized the importance of various skills and qualities that are crucial in nursing, including those we now refer to as soft skills and communication skills. Although the specific terms "soft skills" and "communication skills" were not commonly used during her time, her writings and teachings highlighted the significance of these abilities. Here are a few key points from her work: 1. Empathy and Compassion : Nightingale believed that nurses should possess a deep sense of empathy and compassion for their patients. 2.Clear Communication: While she may not have used modern terminology, Nightingale understood the importance of clear communication. She advised nurses to provide patients with information in a way they could understand, ensuring that patients were well-informed about their care. This is a repost from a beautiful nurse on Facebook and I thought I would share. “The nursing profession has lost its way. It breaks my heart, because nursing is my heart. There is no such thing as holistic nursing. Nursing by definition is holistic. Florence Nightingale was the mother of modern nursing. What was so revolutionary about her and her teachings was that she took into consideration the entire person. She preached the importance of clean air, clean linen, clean water. She was a pioneer in germ theory. She talked about providing emotional and spiritual support to patients. She talked about how everything is connected, and the role of nursing is to provide that holistic support. Nursing by definition is holistic. And yet in the last few decades, the nursing model has been swallowed up by the medical model. The medical model is disease focused, problem focused. See a problem, fix it. The medical model does not see the whole person. Everything is fragmented, compartmentalized. This model works great much of the time, but oftentimes it misses the point. Nursing has lost its way because it has been swallowed up by the corporate beast that is Western medicine. A labyrinth of departments and billing codes, a quagmire of problems to fix, diagnoses to make, and symptoms to treat. Almost no emphasis on the big picture. On spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual wellness. Nightingale understood that each human has the inherent ability to heal themselves. As nurses our job is to encourage and promote that self healing. I don’t know what that would look like in today’s system. I do know that I want to be a part of building whatever it is that comes next. Western medicine is broken. We are in a new era of nursing. Human connection 👫 is more crucial than ever, specifically in the nursing profession 👩⚕️ . While many often focus on the complex science of nursing 🔬 , it is the art of nursing that is its true essence . This is defined as the nurse's ability to be compassionate, caring, and communicative, which enables nurses to connect with their patients. Nursing is a profession based on caring, and it has been ranked as the most trusted profession in America for 22 consecutive years. This would not have been possible without building community, holistic caring, and making human connections. As a nurse leader, I have faced challenges in helping my nurses learn how to make those connections and avoid solely task-based interactions with their patients. 📕 Enter David Brooks and his New York Times Bestseller “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen”. Here are a few things I learned from Brooks that I share with my staff: 1.     “People who are permanently damaged by trauma seek to assimilate what happened into their existing models and people who grow try to accommodate what happened in order to create new models”. We can grow from the trauma we have experienced with a growth mindset. I am committed to helping facilitate that. 💪 2.     To know someone who is suffering, you must know how they are processing the experience and know how to accompany them in that process. Accompaniment is an other-centered experience where we can “be attentive, sensitive, and unhurried. You are not leading or directing the other person but are there as a faithful presence, open to whatever may come.” 🧘♂️ 3.     Curiosity makes us empathetic and open to seeing a person. It allows us to practice illumination where we are telling our patients that we trust them before they trust us. As Brooks says, “Respect is a gift that you offer with your eyes.” With every interaction we are conveying a message with the energy we emit, the way we look or don’t look at a person, and by what we say and don’t say. 🎁 Thank you 🙏 David Brooks for this tool that will forever be at the heart of how I choose to make connections with others! 💜 #davidbrooks #howtoknowaperson #humanconnection #patientexperience #randomhouse #curiosity

For my nursing contacts - shared from Diana Jefferies The Unfolding Narratives Project We are asking if any RN working in an acute care setting can come and talk to us in a focus group about the films we are making for undergraduate nursing students to ask them to reflect on their communication skills. In our films we show how using empathy and compassion when talking to patients really does improve health outcomes. So far we have made films that look at best practice nursing communication for an Aboriginal person who has dementia and presents to Emergency, we show how deescalation techniques help nurses to understand what is happening with our patients and we are also looking at how a nurse can care for an African family whose baby is not going to make it out of the NICU. But we need you to let us know if our films are hitting the right notes to really help our students learn these important communication skills.
