💼 Question for recruiters & hiring managers: What’s missing from UX profiles? I’m currently working on a project to improve the experience for recruiters and hiring managers visiting my portfolio. While I’ve focused on making it easy to navigate and understand, I know your time is limited, and a quick review can only reveal so much. So, I’d love to hear your insights: 🧠 What do you wish you could learn about a UX candidate that you can't get from their CV or a quick glance at their portfolio? Your feedback would be invaluable as I work on refining my approach! #UXDesign #Recruiting #Hiring #JobSearch #CareerGrowth #UXCommunity #OpenToWork

The tech industry has experienced significant layoffs and hiring freezes over the past year, with the user experience (UX) sector also feeling the impact. According to Indeed's data: (Source: https://lnkd.in/e96YmWWC) The UX job market has seen considerable fluctuations. For example, UX research job baseline (100%) at Q1 2021, then rose dramatically to 279% in Q1 2022, but then fell to 75% in Q2 2023. Similarly, UX design job listings spiked to 224% in 2021, dropped to 65% in 2022, and have continued to fall in 2023. The latter half of 2022 saw a softening in hiring for both UX research and design, reflecting declines in the broader tech job market. Since their peak in early 2022, UX research job listings have dropped 71%, and UX design job listings have dipped 70%. Other tech roles, such as software engineering and product management, have seen similar pullbacks in open positions. For those job seekers aiming to land a UX role, the outlook is challenging. A classic challenge is: "The portfolio paradox" You need to get a job to complete projects, to put them into a portfolio to get a job. In the linked guide I talk about several "hacks" to get around this. The industry has yet to hit an obvious bottom, and layoffs have resulted in a surge of experienced UX professionals in the job market. While roles are available, competition is expected to remain high. See my short essay "How to Get Your First Job in UX" linked in the comments below. Here's a quote from it: Do I need a university degree? No. Would it help me stand out amongst other applicants? Probably, for some roles. It really depends on the sector or industry you’re going into. For example: if you work in marketing for a fashion company, moving into UX on an online fashion store would be a great transition - and it’s unlikely a degree or masters’ in UX or HCI would add much to your chances of getting hired. Conversely - if you’re applying to work in UX on deeply technical software for database engineering, a Computer Science degree would make you a more desirable candidate to a recruiter. #uxdesign #economy #hiring #softwareengineering

Streamlining Design Hires at DesignFrens • Sharing design career growth tips • Optimist ✌🏼 • Freelance Product Designer
Recently got rejected? Here are a few possible scenarios, why 👇 1- You're not a good match ⏤ Technical and skill-wise ⏤ No relevant experiences (industry, ...) ⏤ Applied for the wrong role 2- You're a good match, but ⏤ You did a poor job presenting your values through your CV and Portfolio ⏤ Your application wasn't eye/scan-friendly ⏤ You didn't get noticed because of the recruiters' lack of proper skills in understanding design or even biases ⏤ High competition made your application lost in the funnel 3. You're overqualified ⏤ Overqualified candidates usually get rejected because of the risk of leaving the company, dissatisfaction, or asking for higher pay. What else? Senior Product Designer | Mentor | I help Product Designers navigate through today's competitive job market
Getting into UX and product design is pretty much impossible these days. 👇 I can attest this after talking with a large number of juniors who have a hard time to break through the industry. Fewer than 5% of tech companies in Europe and the US are open to hiring entry-level talent. What’s the solution then? Well.. First of all the market will bounce back eventually and there already signs that this is happening. Second of all, avoid starving to death while waiting for the next golden era in tech and product design. ➡ Keep on improving your skills on a daily basis. ➡ Keep your portfolio sharp and your resume polished, while building connections with key decision-makers by offering value for free initially. Once the market bounces back, juniors will likely have plenty of opportunities to land a job in tech. 🍀 Repost if you found the above valuable.

Building #Zeebu | Ex - Co-Founder at Iconscout (Acq. by LottieFiles) Prev Senior Visual Designer at Polygon Labs
#HR #Founders, do you consider co-founding experience to be ZERO when hiring? I've worked for over 7 years to build @Iconscout, which was acquired by @Lottiefiles in 2020. I left the company 2 years later to progress and learn more in my career. However, while applying for a job recently, I had a terrible experience. My founding experience and my hard work to build a company are being counted as zero. For what? Here's what happened in detail: About a month ago, I interviewed for a job as a UI Designer at one of the biggest banks in India. I performed well in all the interview rounds, completed all the tasks they gave me, and they even sent me an email saying I got the job. So, I started preparing to join the company by sending them all the documents they needed. But during the onboarding, I hit a roadblock. The HR department told me that they don't consider my experience as a co-founder of a company as real work experience. According to them, it's just personal experience, not professional. So, even though I've been working for over 7 years, they only counted 2 years as real experience. During those 7 years at IconScout, I not only learned about design but also how to build a company from the ground up and navigate through numerous business and other challenges that were thrown at us. It simply means all the work I did as a co-founder has no value in their eyes. The most shocking part was that all this co-founder experience is clearly mentioned in my resume and portfolio. Even after seeing that, they gave me all the assignments, and I spent almost one and a half months in the entire process. It makes me wonder if they didn't know their own rules or if there is something else. Either way, it's frustrating and confusing to have a job offer taken away like this. So now, I'm back to looking for full-time jobs again. If anyone has any leads or can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for listening and for any support you can offer. #hiring #designjobs ##VisualDesign #UIUX #DesignOpportunities #DesignCareers #Hiring #ProductDesign #remotework #remotejobs #fulltimejobs #fulltimeopportunity #designjobs

🚀 I help innovators build amazing experiences that people love - Service Design | Experience Design | UX Research
Job-Seeking (Still) Sucks. When I (re)started a job search >2 years ago, I was mildly dismayed at the #confusing and #bewildering approach companies were taking to hiring #UXResearchers. From batshit-crazy #ApplicantTrackingSystems, to months-long response times, to 4-8 rounds of interviews... That bafflement soon morphed to #shock and #dismay as I watched companies lay off #UX #Researchers and #Designers by the hundreds, only to try to re-ramp up hiring months later. Or keep positions open which had clearly recently been eliminated. And don't even get me started on the rotting hellscape cesspool that is the #IT #recruiting industry. But there was a tiny glimmer of hope. A colleague and friend, Brian McElaney had for years maintained a Google Sheet called "Mac's Job Tracking", and I was inspired. My own job search has morphed a lot (I've come to realize - again - that I am too much of an #entrepreneur at heart to work inside an organization of any significant size, and would always rather have them as a client than an employer), but I've gathered a few promising job leads and want to share them. These are all: 👉 Jobs *I* would want 👉 Remote-only, or remote-mostly 👉 Senior(ish), usually 👉 UX Research 👉 Actually available, as of the date "Last Checked" 👉 Posted by an Actual #Employer, not a #Recruiter Bonus points are given to employers who post roles on their own website and *DO NOT* use an #ATS like Workday, which is a #usability nightmare for both applicants and hiring professionals. There are only a few there now, but more coming every week (there are some bright spots in this world), and my goal is to keep this updated at least once a month, but hopefully more often, for the foreseeable future. If you're anything like me (passionate about #UX and #UXR, eager for opportunities to make a difference, picky about where you want to work, and a bit #cantankerous), you'll want to check these out. Update for 4/11 - ✨ 15 New Remote Positions Added, including from Veradigm®, Loverly, Adobe and Figma ✨ Moved this from Google Sheets to a tiny little web app, mostly because I like futzing with things, but also because it's more flexible and easier to manage. ✨ You can sign up to receive updates when jobs are added. https://lnkd.in/eJkpDx7J #UXResearch #Jobs #Senior #RemoteWork #WeCanDoBetter
