Lead by example even when no one’s watching.
My daughter goes to the skiing club on weekends.
She’s not always keen to go, but it’s good for her to learn discipline.
That’s usually the only time I have for skiing or snowboarding.
Yesterday was not an ideal day.
Strong winds at the top.
Poor visibility.
Icy.
After my first run, I was ready to call it quits.
Then I remembered that my daughter was out there, skiing for the next couple of hours.
If it’s fine for her to be out in that weather, it’s fine for me, too.
I couldn’t just duck out to the warmth of a cozy pub.
Not when she was braving the cold.
It didn’t matter if she wasn’t watching.
Or, maybe, that’s exactly why it mattered.
Leading by example means doing what we expect of others, even when no one is keeping score.
Even when it’s just us and the mountain.
We’re always watching ourselves, right?
That’s what integrity is all about.
That’s what true character is about.
Because at the end of the day, the most important witness to our actions is ourselves.
Let's be leaders who don't just talk the talk but also walk the walk.
Even when no one’s watching.
