I write this message from a park in sunny Portugal, while my daughter is sleeping on me - which has pretty much been my go-to work set up for the past 1,5 year (minus the Portugal part 😜). Over the past 1,5 year, as I was deeply immersed in the creative energy of new motherhood, I've birthed, rolled out, tested, fine-tuned, re-imagined, and re-birthed a number of passion projects. Not much of this was visible in the public space (apart from the occasional post and workshop), most of it took place 'behind the scenes'; in my inner realms, in the co-creative relationships I was lucky to be part of, and in 'test containers' with early adopters. It was a deeply transformative period, which included the hardest letting goes of my life, whilst gaining a sense of groundedness, clarity, and direction I have never experienced before. To be honest, it's been quite comfortable to operate from 'behind the scenes'. It was a great combination with the motherhood bubble I was in. But now, it's time to be seen and bring my (first) business into the world! I am thrilled to share the website of House of Madu with you (formerly known as Madu Embodied Learning). Madu has a number of meanings in different languages. In Nigerian Igbo and Egyptian it means 'human being' and 'of the people'. Every organisation is a 'House of Madu', a house of human beings. We are often so focused on getting our work done, on achieving results and impact, that we overlook or underestimate the most critical aspects of achieving sustainable change: self-care and personal development. With House of Madu I aim to support purpose-driven professionals and organisations in prioritising well-being and personal leadership, so they can unlock their potential for positive change in the world. Together with a powerful team of facilitators from different backgrounds and areas of expertise, we offer signature courses to professionals and tailored learning journeys to organisations. I'm opposed to the imposition of non African values/culture on Africans just as I don't support African values been imposed on Westerners or Easterners. One thing I learnt is CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE - CQ. In Rome, behave like Romans. But when you are in Ogun, behave like those in Ogun. In fact, we were taught how to customise every presentation/pitch deck for various cultures. If I'm presenting to a team in Nigeria, I know what to include but if I'm presenting to a Chinese, I know what to exclude. If you are like me, interacting daily with people from various cultures, ensure that you take a course on CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE. Google it and study it. Learn how Cultures influence boardroom behaviours, decision making and strategies. A Yoruba boy in UK should not forget to prostrate when he meets his elders in Nigeria. An Igbo young man should not forget to shake with two hands.. Just as the Chinese never forgets to take off their shoes when they enter a home. Working in teams, in partnerships and in contractual relationships is an inevitable part of our work in global development and humanitarian action. Often those teams shift over time, as our work changes project by project. Challenges can be swept under the carpet. They may be interpersonal or organisational. They may be to do with budgets or timelines, personality clashes or something more insidious. Working better in inter-racial and international teams is a core theme in our up coming Skill Share Programme. Understanding the effects of relocating abroad is vital. This is an excellent observation of the impact and solutions.

If you are in charge of bringing in facilitators or trainers for your Indigenous organization or community; 1) Ask for references. Actually phone them. You would be surprised how many people use someone as a reference who has no idea that they were used as a reference and have never worked directly with that person before. Someone who dislikes me very much used me as a reference because they thought it would look good on their resume - I was very honest with that prospective employer and they definitely did not get the job. 2) Check with the aunty network. The aunties know everything. Everything! In particular, who the creeps are. A facilitator is there to pass on information - not to make time with your participants. You would be surprised how many think it’s an actual perk of the job. 3) If they claim to be Indigenous, ask them how. Are you a status Indian? Recognized member of the Red River Métis? Inuit? Is there someone I can call from your family’s home community to verify this? Who are your parents? Grandparents? What community claims you? 4) If they are rematriating to the culture (like, adoptees) ask them how long they have been practicing the traditions, where they got their teachings from and who their Elders are. Contact these Elders as a reference. This is not to say that an adoptee or someone raised outside of the culture can never do the work but if you’ve only been on the Red Road for a year or two, I don’t think you are in a position to be doing cultural workshops and healing work. 5) If the facilitator or team belongs to an organization or program that has an Indigenous name, ask them if the owner of the company is Indigenous. Are the other team members? What language is that company or program name? What protocols were followed to receive that name? If it’s non-Indigenous folks, ask them if they think what they are doing is cultural appropriation. Do not be the ones responsible for bringing in pretendians, frauds, predators or vastly unqualified people into your organization and community. These folks are getting away with it because people are letting them.
