It's rare I watch or listen to a podcast and am inspired. Remembering the word, "inspire" comes from the root, "in spirit", we can say my inspiration has its roots in love, which is exactly what this podcast speaks to: Love as a guiding principle in the leadership, management, and delivery of excellent healthcare. Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, Stephanie Feals and guest, Erik Anderson of Adventist Health Castle go deep into the practical application of love in creating the excellence in healthcare delivery that wins a National Baldrige Award. But it's so much more than winning this prestigious award. It's about the love that brings together leadership, staff, patients, families and community. Together we're better, yes? Having spent several years in the airline industry, we used to equate things to something that resonated with team for ease of communication. For example, depending upon the seat configuration, 500 people a day would fill about two Boeing 787s. It begs the question, why is this an acceptable number that equates to over 180k per year. How HCA, Tenet and CHS have grown — or shrunk — over 5 years: Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare operated 186 hospitals by the end of 2023, up from 179 in 2019. Meanwhile, two other large for-profit health systems — Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems and Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare — have trimmed the number of hospitals they operated over that span.  http://dlvr.it/T44PK7

But what if we consider it a Right??? Aren't we then in an NHS world? How many Americans would be running around screaming SOCIALISM, SOCIALISM. Funny how many Americans think of helping each other as a bad idea- but that's the reality. So, those are the options in the U.S., SOCIALISM vs Stepping over the bodies? Positioned right in the middle of this argument is the Public Utility Model. Until some of the systems were politically corrupted in the 1970's, this model worked great for electricity and a host of other community concerns and vital public needs. It works here too. In fact, once I changed the typical administrative structure in a PU, and developed the sustainable financing model, this design takes healthcare right down to the street level in EVERY community. Imagine- no more insurance needed, no copays, no deductibles, no more bankruptcies! We ALL pay, but a LOT less than we are now and we get a truly integrated health system

But even in the face of these powerful statistics, there is no way to fully articulate just how great their impact is on the happiness of the people who receive care, but also everyone who knows – and all too often takes for granted – the fact that exceptional care is available. The peace of mind that community hospitals provide cannot be overstated. This is one of the many reasons I believe it is so important that we embrace #valuebasedcare that rewards community hospitals for what they naturally strive to achieve – to help entire communities gain greater health.
