Executive Leadership | Strategic Planning | Digital Transformation | Artificial Intelligence | Internet of Things | Operations Management | Service Development | Organizational Development
Buildings play substancial role in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing approximately 40% to the annual total. This includes emissions from both direct building operations and indirect sources like electricity and cooling/heating consumption. As we navigate this challenge, the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in smart city initiatives emerges as a beacon of hope. By embedding these technologies into our Smart Cities initiatives, we have the power to drastically enhance energy efficiency, reduce resource wastage, and significantly lower emissions, marking a pivotal step towards a sustainable urban future. The move towards integrating smart technologies in buildings is not just an environmental imperative but also a strategic opportunity for businesses and governments to align with the SDGs goals, including Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Climate Action (SDG 13). For companies, adopting these innovations signifies a commitment to sustainability that resonates with consumers and stakeholders, reinforcing their role as leaders in the transition to a greener economy. Sustainability ∞ Innovation | Coastal Future Cities | Smart Infrastructure | Business Development | Digital Transformation
🤖 It is not all #AI - The Layers of Intelligence C-suites talk about it, governments are formulating regulations for the use of it, companies are selling it and customers are asking for it. In my current role, I am scouting for digital technologies to improve operational and energy efficiencies. At one of the #WEF24 affiliate panel sessions I virtually attended titled “The Fastest Path to Net Zero Buildings: A Digital & AI First Approach”, Dr Thomas Kiessling from Siemens helped to illustrate the layers of intelligence – which I found useful. The layers and examples relate to buildings but are applicable in any sector. 1. Static Rules: Hard coded rules E.g. The air conditioning in the building goes off at 7pm. 2. Dynamic Behaviour: Applying rules based on feedback E.g. Lights switch off in a zone when no occupancy is detected. 3. Forecasting: Think of it as predicting the future based on past data using statistical models such as regression E.g. Forecasting a building’s net solar energy output, based on historical weather, tenants’ usage and net solar output patterns. 4. Machine Learning: Learning from data through algorithms and statistical models without explicit instructions E.g. Continuous learning and producing tenants’ preferences for comfort such as temperature, humidity. 5. Generative AI: Creating new outputs based on learned patterns E.g. Producing new architectural visuals or synthesising unstructured data. The layers of intelligence will continue to grow, with multimodal AI (combination of text, image, speech, video, audio data types) increasingly considered as the next big thing. Whatever the level of intelligence you select, it should be Use Case, not technology-driven! #digital #energy #netzero #smartcities #futurecities #climateinnovation #DigitalTransformation
Thrilled to have been part of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where I had the honor of being a panellist on the affiliate panel titled "Fastest Path to Net Zero Buildings; A digital and AI approach." It was inspiring to discuss the pivotal role of digitalization and AI in accelerating our journey towards net zero buildings and sustainable infrastructure. The conclusions provide a practical decarbonisation path for building owners and operators: - A few use cases like occupancy-based or weather-dependent lighting and heating, installation of solar roofs, and charging batteries during off peak hours, reduces the energy bill and carbon footprint by 30-50% in most commercial buildings - The IoT platforms and building technologies required are 100% available at cost now low enough to return investment in 2-4 years - AI-based facility co-pilots to identify largest savings, and AI based scenario planning will further improve return on investment in the next 12-18 months The urgency to decarbonize our buildings is more critical than ever. The decisions we make today will echo through the years, impacting not only our environment but also our communities and economies. 🌍 If you want to learn more about how grid-interactive buildings can massively accelerate the share of renewable energy sources in the energy system, read my latest paper here - https://lnkd.in/ecx_hbjR #WEF #Davos #NetZeroBuildings #Sustainability #DigitalTransformation #AI
