Employee Spotlight: Deontae Haynes Position: Production Coordinator Company: Western Container Corporation, located in the Forrest County Industrial Park, WCC is one of the bottle manufacturers for Coca-Cola bottlers. It is WCC's largest facility producing 3 billion preforms, and 1 billion bottles annually. Q: What kind of jobs have you worked in Manufacturing? Deontae: Plywood Supervisor, Plywood press Operator, and a Coil Winder and Lacer, Currently a Production Coordinator. Q: What made you want to get into Manufacturing? Deontae: I never knew once I finished college that I would get into manufacturing, I guess you can say that God just placed me in it, but it offers great benefits and a huge opportunity for career growth. Q: What is something you think most people don’t know or understand about the Manufacturing Industry? Deontae: A lot of people tend to think that manufacturing consists of assembly lines and repetitive labor, but the truth of the matter today's manufacturing requires workers that are high skilled and have a certain level of expertise in the area they are working in. That’s why with most big-time manufacturing companies it's required for you to have a degree. Q: What is your favorite aspect of your job? Deontae: This role I am in now gives me the opportunity to connect with and lead a bunch of different personalities, I would say the best part is being able to connect and work with my crew and build a foundation and relationship off trust. Q: What advice would you give someone who is interested in working in the Manufacturing industry? Deontae: Be able to have enough humility to always learn, NEVER think you know it all. If you are in a leadership position, remember your job is to not be in charge but to take care of the people in your charge. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. Always focus on developing strong technical skills. The most valuable thing you can have are people skills. Can a factory generate its own energy? As a consultant I have visited over a hundred industries in the past two decades. The first visit is not just to understand management goals and process issues but to get the vibe of the place. Understanding this vibe or energy which the shop floor gives off is the key to a successful implementation. A recent visit had me wading through acres of inventories, dusty work environment, disinterested floor supervisors and a middle management who felt they had reached the pinnacle of their industry! At another factory I was confronted with well stacked but large inventories, workers straining at work, an uneducated and unqualified supervisory staff with an interest to learn and a management wanting to look beyond their own industry for ideas. Both factories have a the same potential for improvement but need a vastly different effort. The first floor sucks out the energy from you at the end of each day you spend there. The second makes you want to come back with new thoughts the next morning! But can we actually choose whom we want to work with.....?

Production supervisors provide direct leadership to the majority of a fabricator’s employees. Think about that. How good are their communication skills, and are they in line with the company values? Good companies spend a lot of time and effort in developing their culture with planning, training, discussions, and meetings. Production supervisors carry much of the weight in delivering that message, not necessarily in formal meetings with the hourly team, but in every action and interaction that happens each day. Good supervisors are not always loved and they’re never pushovers, but their good communication and leadership skills should help shop floor productivity and morale.
