CanadaHelps Giving Report 2024 highlights insights and giving trends that are challenging Canada’s charitable sector. While the latest data shows that the total value of charitable donations has increased, the number of people donating has fallen for an 11th straight year. 45% of those who stopped donating in the past few years cite financial constraints. Some other trends include: ◾ A correlation between social connections and philanthropy. People with more close friends are more likely to donate, volunteer, and participate in community events. They also have more confidence in nonprofit leaders. ◾ A rise in online giving with online giving rates almost doubling between 2019-2023 ◾ Increases in gift of securities like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds #philanthropy #nonprofits #charities

This is a really interesting report documenting the steady decline in charitable donations in Canada for the past decade. The report highlights a connection between shrinking social circles and dwindling donations for charities across industries. I believe the arts play a fundamental role in fostering more connected communities--by increasing people's interaction with the arts we can generate greater impact across the non-profit sector. Not only do we need to be creating meaningful art that gets people out of their homes and into the community, but we also need to start pondering creative and innovative ancillary events that encourage audiences to connect with each other, and not just the people they brought with them to the show.

Donor-Advised Funds (#DAFs) continue to grow rapidly in the US (and in Canada) - ranging from small to large donor accounts, held at community foundations, intermediaries, financial institutions. Pace of giving has been a focus of study and advocacy. However, what about the bulk of these philanthropic funds (the donor receives a tax receipt on the day the money is contributed to the DAF), held in endowments and investment accounts? Imagine how much bigger the #impact would be if these funds (now $10B+ in Canada) were invested for positive societal outcomes - in addition to the critical role of the grants made from the DAF pools. #impactinvesting #philanthropy

The annual UK Giving report from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is very insightful and reveals that an impressive 75% of the British General public contributed to a charity in the last year but it also highlights how some of the most affluent areas are among the least generous. The report makes recommendations such as adjusting donations for inflation and making the most of data. The priority is to foster a more widespread and sustainable culture of giving to support charities that are struggling. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gzw6nQVZ

The nonprofit sector has been facing a data deficit for years, but a recent survey has helped fill some of the key gaps in our knowledge about our sector. In January and February 2024, Statistics Canada surveyed more than 8,000 charities and nonprofits about a variety of topics of interest within the sector. What are some of the key takeaways from these results? In this #Imagine360 blog post, we explore the findings and data from the survey and the implications of these on the current state of the sector. Read it here: https://buff.ly/45lOeWY

Following the release of the Future Foundation for Giving Inquiry Report, FIA welcomes the Productivity Commission’s recommendation for improvement in the reporting of charitable bequests data. However, we are disappointed that several key aspects of FIA’s and other stakeholders’ proposals were not adopted in the recommendations. We consider it a missed opportunity for transformative recommendations aimed at removing barriers to growing giving in Australia. But we remain committed to advocating for issues that advance the fundraising sector, reduce barriers to fundraising, and foster donor confidence in fundraising. https://lnkd.in/g3Hg86x8

On 31st May 2024, Our team at Lift the Children, alongside two Charitable Children Institutions (CCIs) we serve, had the privilege of attending a stakeholder forum at Safari Hotel, Lilian Towers on the draft regulations under the Kenya Children Act (No. 29 of 2022. The forum was dedicated to evaluating the regulations developed to operationalize the Children Act 2022. One of the key submissions and recommendations we made was the removal of the renewal fees for CCI certificates, which the regulations had set at Kshs 25,000. We firmly believe that these fees should be abolished, allowing CCIs to renew their certificates free of charge. Given the financial constraints many CCIs face in providing for the children under their care, adding an additional financial burden is counterproductive. We are optimistic that our recommendations will be considered and that these changes will be implemented before the regulations are finalized and enacted. This would significantly support CCIs in continuing their invaluable work for the children. #ChildrensRights #LiftTheChildren #StakeholderForum #ChildrenAct2022 #Charity #CCISupport #Kenya
