Malaysia has a unique starting point with regards to Nature-Based Projects; close to 65% Malaysia’s emissions in 2019 was offset by Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) removals, as reported in the country’s BUR4 compared to most nations within the 5-15% range. Further, given that it has abundant natural forest cover (54%) consisting of inland forest, peat and mangrove, Malaysia’s forest ecosystem makes the retention of nature-based solutions (NbS) a key aspect of ensuring the country continues to achieve its. Nationally determined contributions (NDCs). We take this opportunity in Plenary 4: “Nature-Based Projects: The Opportunities & Challenges, and Lessons Learned” to speak to industry leaders to explore the reasons behind the importance of NbS projects for a country like Malaysia; the opportunities and associated with NbS implementation; strategies for building local competencies to scale; tackling human rights issues and allegations related to these projects; and effective ways to educate and dispel misconceptions on NbS projects. Join Edward Rumsey from Permian Global, Francois Blignaut from SaraCarbon, Dr Jane Koh, PhD from Southridge Group Malaysia, William Acworth from Pollination, Liam Marshall from BeZero Carbon, and Rich Gilmore from Carbon Growth Partners as they discuss the past, present and future of nature-based projects. Exciting Insights on Sustainable Forestry and Paper Production in South Africa! 🌿📄 Do you believe that paper production in South Africa is the primary cause of deforestation? The Paper Manufacturers Association of SA shares the findings of an international survey by Two Sides UK revealing that many South Africans are unaware of the sustainability practices within the country's forestry sector. The survey highlights the misconceptions and confusion surrounding the impact of paper production on forests and deforestation. While 71% of South African consumers understand the importance of using paper products from sustainably managed forests, there remains a persistent belief that a paperless environment is more eco-friendly and that forestry contributes to deforestation. These misconceptions underscore the need for greater awareness and education on the sustainable practices adopted by the forestry industry. 🌱 Thrilled to share updates from our first project in the Dominican Republic! Implemented by PRONATEC AG, a member of the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa, and its partners FUNDOPO and YACAO, this initiative aims to nurture the rich biodiversity present in the country's cocoa #agroforestry systems. 🍫 What makes the project innovative? Diverging from traditional methods, the project pioneers the incorporation of timber production within cocoa plantations. The Dominican forestry law is stringent, but it allows this kind of timber production. This generates additional, long-term revenues for producers while safeguarding biodiversity. Furthermore, the project focuses on propagating local cocoa varieties, leveraging the region's diverse genetic pool to bolster cocoa quality and resilience. This project receives co-funding from SECO Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung through our Innovation Programme. Discover more about this pioneering project by following the link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebeyiVYD 🌳Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) In a recent milestone, PRONATEC’s subsidiary YACAO made headlines as the first ROC-certified entity in Latin America 👇 https://lnkd.in/efxHBQzy #SustainableCocoa #DominicanRepublic #CocoaDiversity #RegenerativeAgriculture #IncomeDiversification #SWISSCO #InnovationInCocoa

🆕 For many companies out there, EUDR is something completely new. Companies operating in the timber industry can instead use their experience with EUTR, which they have been subject to since 2013, to understand the new requirements and implement the right processes to comply with EUDR. ❗ Both the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) and the EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) are fundamental to ensuring that timber and timber products are sourced from sustainable forestry. The upcoming EUDR follows the same logic, but extends both the obligations and the scope of the EUTR. 📖 Read this blog post to understand the key differences between these two regulations and how your compliance process will change: https://lnkd.in/dSZJXxUw 🌲 GTS has been working with timber companies for over 10 years to help them comply with EUTR through our digital platform RADIX Tree. Since EUDR came into force, our team has developed new functionalities and automations to extend compliance to EUDR. RADIX Tree is our flexible solution for the effortless transition from EUTR to EUDR. #EUDRCompliance #EUDRReadiness #EUDR
