The great unifier at Sterne admissions events is what happens to the faces of middle school parents and high school students when we invoke “The H Word.” Fear, panic, red faces, lots of downcast eyes. The real transformation happens when we explain: — Homework is highly individualized; especially for lower and middle school students, family and extracurricular time is viewed as critical to child development. —Homework is meant to: A. Reinforce classroom learning B. Provide enrichment & creativity whenever possible C. Prepare students by providing context and scaffolding for tomorrow’s lesson D. Be at students’ independent level of engagement We encourage students to keep a timer. If HW takes more than 1 hour at most levels, the teacher needs to know (and make adjustments) We encourage teachers to talk to each other about assignments, and work together to ensure that they are keeping HW to an appropriate timeframe We want HW to stay on campus as much as possible. Our HS schedule includes 1.5 hours of small group and 1:1 time for students to access teachers (included in tuition) for HW help. Our thoughts: —No child should be crying over HW —No teenager should be spending hours teaching themselves or covering what teachers didn’t get to in class that day —Homework is NOT a badge of honor—let’s stop treating it that way. —It’s also NOT an indicator of college success. "They found that the number of students who transferred that fall grew 5.3 percent compared to fall 2022. That overall growth included lateral transfers, that is, transfers between four-year institutions or between community colleges, but the surge was mainly driven by a 7.7 percent increase in upward transfer-transfers from two-year colleges to four-year institutions. I have always believed that homework (HW) for students should be meaningful. As educators we need to ask ourselves the question “how will this assignment help the students learn or hone in the concept?” In my AP Statistics class, HW is assigned at most 8 or 9 times throughout the school year. However, the students are learning intensely in my class - they are using technology, analyzing real data to create inferences, and collaborating with each other to explore how statistics can be used in almost all aspects of life. We are using class time effectively. Usually students are involved in several after school activities. They need to be involved in these activities- these are needed for them to explore their passion outside of classroom and to bring some downtime/joy/mental wellbeing. If students are spending more than 3.5 hours everyday on HW, as educators it is our obligation to reflect back and ask ourselves the question: “is my assignment meaningful - how is this assignment helping my students grow?” Depending on the answer of this question we need to re-evaluate how we assign HW.
