The #QuaveLab has a new paper out in the journal, Urogynecology. We examined E. coli isolates from 40 post-menopausal UTI patients for persister cells. We also tested different 1st-line abx for their capacity to generate more persisters. Check out today's newsletter for more info on the paper. #AMR #antibiotics #UTI #infections https://ow.ly/at1u50QXbiK

Early identification of a ward-based outbreak of Clostridioides difficile using prospective multilocus sequence type-based Oxford Nanopore Technologies genomic surveillance Prospective genomic surveillance of C. difficile using nanopore sequencing permitted the identification of an outbreak of ST2 CDI that would have otherwise gone undetected. Here, the authors describe the potential value of a prospective genomic surveillance system, which can be implemented at the level of a medium-sized front-line clinical microbiology laboratory, at relatively low-cost, without the need for specialist bioinformaticians to analyze data. https://lnkd.in/gvqsbzD3

[#BioguardProduct] Avian hepatic disease can present with vague symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish from other conditions. Although clinical enzymology is commonly used, it only indicates hepatocyte injury without revealing the chronicity or severity of the disease. Diagnostic imaging can help identify hepatomegaly and ascites, but a definitive diagnosis requires histological examination. Treatment for avian hepatic disease involves providing palliative care, addressing the specific illness, and creating an optimal environment for liver healing. Biochemistry results may show various anomalies, and our miniCHEM Biochemistry Analyzer efficiently analyzes key markers for precise results in just 12 minutes. This analyzer is tailored for various species with minimal sample volume.

Rapid microbial and AST identification in blood cultures. If the data are correct, this could represent a major step forward in treating sepsis in not only hospitals but also in resource limited areas such as developing countries and battlefield conditions. Getting blood cultures performed in a deployed environment and a rural environment is a challenging aspect of clinical microbiology. Combine this with new algorithms for the need for blood cultures, the need for unnecessary blood cultures and wait times will be substantially reduced. #publichealth #labmedicine #battlefieldmedicine #combatmedicine #microbiology #clinmicro #sepsis #bloodinfection #armymedicine #armymicrobiology #armymedicalmodernization https://lnkd.in/gt3vt6tq

Principal Engineer : (the opinions expressed here are my own and I do not represent them to be those of any particular government agency, group, or organization.)
To be able to colonise a host or cause infection, microbes must be able to adapt and respond to changes in their environment. One of the most important environmental signals for opportunistic pathogens is ambient pH, with changes in external pH resulting in phenotypic, metabolic and physical changes in fungi and bacteria (i.e. E. coli, Salmonella, Aspergillus, Candida). Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen of humans that can colonise and infect niches of varying pH including the acidic mucosa of the vagina. Here we show that growth in an acidic environment results in structural modification of the fungal cell wall, a dynamic organelle key to immune recognition. These cell wall perturbations resulted in enhanced immune recognition of the fungal pathogen, a strong proinflammatory immune response and enhanced recruitment of neutrophils. Therefore, colonisation of acidic mucosa may result in the unmasking of cell wall components that trigger hyper-activation of the innate immune response and could contribute to immunopathology associated with vaginal candidiasis.
Adaptation of Candida albicans to environmental pH induces cell wall remodelling and enhances innate immune recognition
