People with substance use disorder (SUD) and their peers play an important role in their own wellness and recovery. They also influence how those of us working with and for people with SUD speak and deliver services. In observance of Recovery Month, we've updated a post from our blog archives--"Nothing For Us Without Us"--to reflect recent progress and current language while continuing to honor the power of peer relationships in recovery. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/eHsGUPKh

The racial disparities in licensing exam pass rates demonstrate how systemic barriers not only hold back professionals in their careers but also hurt communities relying on local organizations for accessible mental health support. This Friday, we're taking time to unpack the forces driving these disparities and discuss ways organizations can support their workers preparing for licensing exams. Tomorrow is International Self Care Day, but we think every day should be self-care day. As a community of victim-survivors, lived experienced advocates, loved ones or professional support people it is important to practice self-care. The research shows us that self-care helps to mitigate the impacts of trauma, vicarious trauma and burnout but it can be tricky to prioritise. Find out more about information about self-care and coping with trauma at fullstop.org.au.

In case you missed it last week, the #TimeForAction report was released synthesising outcomes from the #PreventionInPractice Summit in December. #TimeForAction outlines four key priorities for collective action across governments, communities and services. These key priorities are supported by practical actions that can be taken now including allocating longer-term funding for prevention programs, increasing the involvement of people with lived and living experience, and improving data collection and reporting. https://lnkd.in/g4ZDw5_b
There is a significant gap between researching how to prevent mental health concerns and putting it into practice. The outcomes from the Prevention in Practice Summit provide a valuable roadmap for action. We thank everyone who shared their perspectives at our event last year and our event partners Prevention United, Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Manna Institute. Biscuits, a cup of tea, and an interactive task on 'understanding health systems' made for a fun morning at the Active Devon team day. Learning is one of my core values, and listening to Gareth Dix is always a pleasure. It's a complex picture, but I have come away with a fire in my belly to develop our work further. #ActiveDevon #HealthSystems #Learning #ProfessionalDevelopment
Great to lead a creative interactive morning session for Active Devon on ‘understanding health systems’ and the role of physical activity in prevention and treatment. Lots of discussion around complexity, connectivity and collaboration. Also much thinking sharpened by the recent Darzi report. Still find it fascinating that Lord Darzi rightly highlights Mental Health, Cancer treatment and Cardiovascular intervention as areas of focus and need, and the unequivocal evidence of physical activity as both a factor in prevention and supporting the management of these conditions. Further great conversations and learning from those with experience in the afternoon with our GP board member Kay Brennan, and CEO of a Torridge CVS Rebecca Sharples and Mental Health Alliance lead for Northern Devon Phil Harris, all helping bring to life the reality that our health, well being and care is a multi-partner system collective with community (place) at the heart.
