This week I had the opportunity to indulge in chat with Mani Dhingra, Ph.D., Smart City Digital Twin Manager, at Dublin City Council / ADAPT SFI Research Center, as part of Geospatial World's #GWPrimeLive segment. Some of the 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 from the chat: • Cities today are highly complex, encompassing not only urban, physical, and social structures but also a #digital fabric. 𝗜𝗼𝗧-𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 and 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 are pervasive, capturing vast amounts of data. Additionally, detailed 𝟯𝗗 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 contribute to the data landscape. These technologies generate big data at high velocity, making it crucial to interpret and utilize this information effectively. Dublin City Council's smart city initiatives focus on integrating these technologies through #DigitalTwins and geospatial techniques. This convergence helps derive meaningful insights, which are then shared with service providers to inform and enhance their projects. • There is a need for a standardized approach to defining data formats to manage large volumes of data effectively. Additionally, interoperable platforms are required to integrate diverse data within 2D and 3D built environments. Dublin City Council is addressing challenges related to siloed data by launching pilot data governance projects with their active travel and planning teams, aiming to improve data management. Other challenges in their workflow include the technical complexity of Digital Twins and existing skill gaps. • The policy landscape in Europe is undergoing significant changes, with the new 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗰𝘁 and 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 playing a crucial role in streamlining workflows for organisations like Dublin City Council. In the Irish context, policies and strategies focusing on the use of #AIforPublicGood have also been instrumental in supporting these efforts. • As part of the global #PartnershipforHealthyCities initiative (initiated by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Vital Strategies, and World Health Organization), Dublin City Council has launched the 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 project. The primary objective is to enhance understanding of active travel patterns in the city. This project aims to address gaps in current methodologies by developing an 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗶𝘁, replacing the ad-hoc data collection approach with a systematic and integrated process. I’m excited to share our recent report on ‘Unified Digital Highways (UDH)’, launched in collaboration with JICA in Cairo, Egypt. This report reflects months of research into how UDH can transform isolated communities into vibrant hubs by facilitating data sharing.   Just as physical highways connect localities, UDH aims to break down data silos in our digitised world, unlocking new opportunities and fostering innovation. These networks, based on Digital Public Infrastructure principles, are essential for driving inclusive services and enhancing the digital economy, particularly as data becomes increasingly vital. Our report provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and implementing UDH, highlighting its potential across various sectors. It distinguishes UDH from traditional data-sharing models by offering 15 guiding principles for governance, technology, and execution, serving as a roadmap for building scalable, inclusive networks.   As we move towards a more integrated digital future, this report seeks to encourage dialogue and action around UDH development, ensuring data enhances public services and creates equitable opportunities in emerging nations. 🎉 I'm thrilled to share that our research paper titled "Agent-based Digital Traffic Model Generation for Regions Facing Data Scarcity Using Aggregated Cellphone Data: A Case Study for Brussels" has been published in the International Journal of Digital Earth. This work was originally completed around 2021, but it faced several unpleasant challenges during the publication process. Now, after navigating those difficulties, I'm excited to see it finally published and accessible to a broader audience! In this research, we primarily focus on how we generated the essential input data—especially the synthetic travel demand—for our #MATSim #Brussels scenario. There are already several methods for generating MATSim input using open data. However, for cities like Brussels facing data scarcity, it is quite common to see data that's accessible elsewhere to be unavailable in these regions. To address this, we present a data processing pipeline that generates synthetic travel demand using aggregated #cellphone Data. Due to the ubiquitous nature of such data worldwide, our algorithm demonstrates significant transferability to other regions with similar situations for #agentBasedModel generation while preserving individual #privacy constraints (#GDPR). Overall, this research would serve as valuable guidance for ABM modellers in data collection and specific modelling setups, lowering the entry barrier of ABM research towards more efficient, representative and reproducible ABMs. I would like to thank all data providers (especially Justin Delloye) for their suggestions when we were searching available data for Brussels Proximus Group, Statbel (Directorate-general Statistics - Statistics Belgium), Institut Bruxellois de Statistique et d’Analyse, & Vias institute. TOMI provides 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮.
