Eating light: Finnish startup begins making food ‘from air and solar power’ Maker hopes solein, protein grown with #CO2 and #electricity, will cut environmental impact of farming The factory’s owner, Solar Foods, has started production at a site in Vantaa, near the Finnish capital of Helsinki, that will be able to produce 160 tonnes of food a year. It follows several years of experimenting at lab scale. Efficient US farmers get 3.3 tonnes of soya beans from each harvest of a hectare, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. Sustainability is often seen to be too big or too complex a topic for businesses to get their arms around. I believe two things can help here: 1) Start small and leverage digital capabilities to capture data. 2) Make small changes! Examples of which I have shared below: - Waste reduction: it's all about smarter production. Simple steps like waste audits and lean manufacturing can significantly cut waste. - Renewable energy: embracing solar, wind, and biomass energy is challenging but crucial for a greener future. - Conserving water: from high-efficiency systems to rainwater harvesting, every effort to save water counts. As we move towards a more sustainable future, it's these small but impactful changes that will make a big difference.
