🌁 With a demand of 14 billion cubic meters in 2020, the concrete and cement industry has a significant carbon footprint. Decarbonizing cement and concrete production is crucial for achieving our 2050 net-zero goals and limiting global warming to a 1.5°C increase. This requires exploring innovative solutions to reduce emissions. 🌱 💡 Moving away from traditional carbon-intensive methods, like Portland cement manufacturing, is essential. To achieve this, we need to reimagine processes, chemistries, and raw materials. Some solutions even have the potential to be carbon-negative, offering a sustainable shift for the industry. For example, Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology allows the capture of carbon from clinker production, helping reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. What Are Low-Carbon Cement Alternatives? Low-carbon cement alternatives are innovative materials designed to reduce the carbon footprint of traditional cement, which is responsible for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. These alternatives focus on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions during production, creating more sustainable building materials that contribute to eco-friendly construction. One of the most promising low-carbon alternatives is *geopolymer cement*. Made from industrial byproducts like fly ash or slag, this type of cement can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Another alternative, *limestone calcined clay cement (LC3)*, uses a blend of limestone and calcined clay, offering a 40% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional Portland cement. Other approaches include using *carbon capture and storage* techniques during cement production or incorporating *biomass* as a fuel source. Additionally, recycled materials like *demolition waste* can be repurposed into new construction materials, reducing the need for energy-intensive production. These low-carbon cement alternatives are gaining attention as the construction industry seeks ways to combat climate change. "In 2014, hundreds of Angelenos gathered downtown to watch more than 2,000 trucks pour concrete into a vast hole. During that event, Los Angeles set a world record: 80 million pounds of concrete were laid down over 18 straight hours to form the foundation for the Wilshire Grand Center, which now towers 73 stories over the city. This material that has been used for thousands of years, that formed the Colosseum and the Pantheon, has become indispensable. It's the most-consumed human-made material on Earth. It's also one of society's biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, manufacturing of cement—which binds together sand and rock to form concrete—emits 8% of the carbon dioxide pollution in the atmosphere, contributing to the climate change that's causing wildfires, hurricanes and record heat waves. Cement and concrete manufacturing emits as much carbon dioxide as India." #cement #co2

Back in December 2023 the Mission Possible Partnership released a new report, called ‘Making Net Zero Concrete and Cement Possible’, that shows how the sector can reach net zero by 2050. Yet, to meet the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, urgent action is needed across three groups of levers:  22% emissions reduction can be achieved on the demand side through efficiency improvements in construction and design reducing the volume of concrete needed without compromising safety or durability.  25% reduction can be achieved in process emissions on the supply side by deploying Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCMs) to decrease the use of clinker; whilst bringing alternative chemistries to commercial stage.  53% of emissions can be reduced, eliminated or captured through a combination of fuel switch, power sector decarbonisation and carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS). #Green Concrete Our planet Earth is facing a challenge due to global warming. The main reason is the release of harmful gas from manufacturing industries and the waste they are generating. #Cement industry releases 7-8% of the global carbon dioxide. Now a day the in the world, concrete is the second most utilized material next to water, this concrete production mainly depends on cement. Scholars are now trying to produce #Zero cement concrete through geopolymerization. As I am a construction material researcher, I strongly recommend a # waste-based concrete. The main reason is due to its advantage of promoting a circular economy. Utilizing industrial products for concrete production has dual significance, Utilizing waste material will decrease landfill waste and secondly, it minimises cement consumption. Our plant needs green and sustainable construction materials.

A very interesting idea. From my own understanding, it is possible to recycle any Portland cement paste by heating it to the same temperatures as before, of 1400 to 1600 degrees Celsius, to remove the carbon dioxide and to produce the desired Alite and Belite phases. The reason for not doing this previously is likely the issue of removing the additional constituents materials that make up concrete. This is likely a costly and difficult process on a large scale. Concrete contains various types of coarse and fine aggregate. It may also contain cement replacement binders, like flyash and GGBS. I hope it can be found to be economically possible, as we have a finite amount of the earth’s limestone available to produce cement.

Cement and concrete are a very large part of the emissions puzzle, and this video outlines why and what is being done about it, but who has 10 minutes to spare??! So here is the TL;DR : - concrete manufacture is the source of 8% of global GHG emissions - there are loads of smart people working on this - their solutions are promising - but they are still over a decade or more away - they are unlikely to be cheaper Which means we need to be smarter about concrete use today. Which is exactly why Bentley Built avoids the use of concrete where possible. We avoid ICF assemblies, we work to minimize the size of our concrete foundations, and are always looking for alternatives where possible.
