Why Simulation is the Key to Automotive Innovation & Problem Solving 🌐🚗 The automotive industry is undergoing a seismic shift propelled by technological breakthroughs, environmental mandates, and shifting consumer expectations. Embracing this transformation, automakers turn to simulation to conquer their greatest challenges. Let's take a look at 3 key challenges. #ElectrifiedPowertrains: Transitioning to fully electric powertrains is a priority, and simulation emerges as the driving force behind it. With fewer components, electric vehicles are simpler in design, yet the challenge lies in optimizing the battery. Simulation workflows play a crucial role in determining the ideal battery size, package, and range, while also ensuring safety under extreme conditions. By employing physics-based reduced-order models (ROMs), engineers can develop efficient battery management software. Simulation proves indispensable in simultaneously optimizing structural, thermal, and electromagnetic requirements, unleashing thousands of design iterations in a fraction of the time required for traditional methods. Advancing #DriverAssistanceSystems and #Autonomy: While the dream of fully autonomous vehicles persists, challenges necessitate a cautious approach. Simulation steps in as the catalyst for innovation, allowing engineers to virtually develop, test, and validate safe automated driving technologies within days. Complex scenarios, once reliant on physical testing over millions of miles, now find resolution through the marriage of safety analysis and simulation. This synergy replicates real-world conditions, predicting outcomes earlier in the development process and ensuring the paramount safety of drivers and passengers. 💻 Supporting Software-Defined Vehicles: As vehicles evolve into software-defined entities, managing over 100 million lines of code, simulation becomes the linchpin of this revolution. SDVs enable seamless feature updates through over-the-air transmissions, mimicking the consumer product experience. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) emerges as a critical methodology, steering the vehicle through changing software requirements and evolving hardware prerequisites. Functional safety and cybersecurity analysis, integrated into the original design, persist throughout the software's lifecycle. Simulation not only designs the original vehicle hardware but also validates new software through digital twin hardware models. Virtual validation ensures safety and reliability before each software update, reinforcing trust in OTA transmissions. Beyond the headline automotive trends, innovation permeates from every facet. Simulation remains the cornerstone, optimizing each component for quality, weight, cost, and technology. From sustainable materials to smarter electromechanical components, simulation ensures that every innovation on the road is born from a digital realm of possibilities. #Automotive #Innovation #Simulation #Mobility
