Velocity Credit Union is spotlighting and celebrating employees for Black History Month. Today we are spotlighting Stephen Branch from Business Intelligence. What does Black History Month mean to you? Black History Month is the opportunity to engage with and embrace the contributions set forth by the African Diaspora. It’s also an opportunity to understand the struggles Black people around the world face, but also celebrate our resilience. How important is representation to you in the workforce and community? The importance of black representation is important for not only me and the black community, but it is vital for the next generation. What advice would you give to Black professionals looking to get into your field? Focus on the things you enjoy, work towards them with an ambitious mindset and the firm belief that there is nothing you cannot achieve. There is not one single moment in black history that I could separate from the plethora of achievements within the black community that influenced my path in life. However, due in major part to the relentless efforts and ingenuity of my ancestors I have been given the opportunity to forge my own path as God intended. Who has been an inspiration to you? My Mother, Will Smith, and the rest of my family. Thank you, Stephen, for sharing with us; we appreciate all your hard work and dedication!

🌟 Celebrating Black History Month! 🌟 At CE International, we honor the legacy and contributions of Black individuals worldwide - in the past, present, and future. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we're reminded of the profound and important impact Black leaders, thinkers, and educators have had and continue to have on shaping the world, especially in the area of #education. The work of earlier Black trailblazers such as Mary McLeod Bethune and Fanny Jackson Coppin created educational opportunities for Black children in the U.S. Later, brave Black children such as Ruby Bridges walked into newly desegregated schools to pursue the education they deserved. Worldwide, countless Black leaders have worked to build quality educational opportunities for children and youth in their communities, and today, Black education leaders globally advocate, teach, and innovate to build better #education systems, resources, and opportunities for all. As we commemorate Black History Month, we celebrate these achievements and recommit ourselves to creating inclusive educational environments worldwide so that all children can thrive. DEI Consultant and Executive Coach | Helping businesses develop sustainable inclusivity strategies through workshops, team and individual coaching.
Black History Month is next week in the US and I have a confession to make. As a kid I HATED Black History Month. I was tired of hearing the same stories about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. By middle school I pretty much checked out. By high school it felt like I knew everything I needed to know about Black history. Slavery happened, it ended, “separate but equal”, “I have a dream” with MLK and Rosa sat at the front of the bus. I was over it. I’m sure your team is tired of the same song and dance every year as well. For this year’s Black History Month, please do more than just the “flags, food and fun” as Dr. Jonathan Ashong-Lamptey says 😂 The unconscious bias training is getting old as well. Black History Month (and every affinity month) is more than just that. It’s an opportunity to evaluate what you’ve actually been doing to support these groups and invest in making your workplace a better environment for them. Your team members are probably already rolling their eyes as they’re getting the emails about the events y’all are planning to put on. Your team isn’t asking for a “soul food day”. Your Black employees are asking for you to do something beyond the surface level that actually has an impact on them and their community. Next month is the perfect time to reinvest and re-evaluate where you can be doing better to support your current Black team members and pave the way for future ones. If you’d like my support to start creating real impactful change for your Black employees (and yes, we can throw in a workshop as well), let’s start a conversation in the DM’s.

How should companies celebrate Black History Month? Center your celebration around elements of your DEI strategy. Planning for Black History Month should start with revisiting your DEI goals and ensuring your decisions advance your objectives. For example, if one of your goals for the year is to improve retention of Black staff, consider ways to center that topic during the month and generate ideas for how to create change in this area. If another one of your DEI goals is to build a culture of trust, your process will likely involve soliciting input and involvement from staff, demonstrating your transparency and intent McKinsey report, “Race in the workplace: The Black experience in the US private sector,” highlights trust-building measures that advance that objective. If you made lofty promises in 2023 and have since fallen short, this is an opportunity to revisit your goals and inject the resources into making them a priority. Make Black History Month count for you and your organization. #blackhistorymonth #pinnacletalentacquisition

I was all set to wish you a happy Black History Month, but then something happened that completely flipped my perspective. I was mentioned by Rhiannon Gallagher as a "black futurist" in reference to a recent Variety article https://lnkd.in/exB2_uDn. Instead of dwelling on the past, it made me start thinking ahead about black futures. My daily mission is to get more black students and job seekers excited about designing the technologies of tomorrow and enriching the manufacturing workforce of the future. My goal is to inspire and equip the next generation of black innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders in fields like STEM. So this month, while we honor the struggles and achievements of the past, let's also envision the boundless potential of the future. The past is prologue, but the future is ours to write. This Black History | Black Futures Month, I feel energized about all we can accomplish. I hope you feel inspired too about the endless possibilities ahead. We stand on the shoulders of those before us, now let's reach for the skies! The key is opening doors for young people today. So that with hard work and opportunity, they can achieve things we can only imagine. The future belongs to those who prepare for it. And it's on us to make sure black youth are ready to make their mark. Celebrating Black History Month To all the phenomenal black business owners, entrepreneurs, and creatives who grace our communities with their talent and tenacity: This month, as we honor the legacy and achievements of black individuals throughout history, let's also turn a reflective eye towards our own collective journey. The road to success is paved with the support and unity we offer each other. #growwithcarl Remember, my progress is not your regress. We must dismantle the myths that have been instilled in us—a mentality that has been a tool of oppression for far too long. We have been taught to see each other as competition rather than allies, influenced by the age-old strategy of divide and conquer. But history has shown us that we are strongest when we stand together. Let's reject the "one pie theory," which falsely claims that opportunity is scarce and that one person's gain is another's loss. There is not just one pie, my friends, but an abundance of pies, enough to share and multiply. As we forge ahead, let's commit to celebrating each other's wins and providing a platform for growth. Let's network, collaborate, and invest in one another. Every retweet, every referral, every word of encouragement builds a community that thrives together. This Black History Month, let's pledge to support and uplift each other, not just in words but in action. Together, we can break barriers, build empires, and inspire the next generation of black excellence. #BlackHistoryMonth #SupportBlackBusiness #Unity #CommunityGrowth #BlackExcellence #TogetherWeRise #growwithcarl #WeGrowTogether
