Certainly I’m not surprised….. I’ve been following the evolution of vending machines for several years. I believe the Covid period accelerated these advancements. Fading fast are the old school “transactional” venders where a bottled beverage or candy/snack would be available. Today, vending machines have grown the sheer variety of available products as well as improved the look, feel, engagement, size, and merchandising. Use of video to “tell the story” have made them more relevant and a pathway for a brands expansion, business channel or entry point. And…..without labor, they are able to create incremental spending and not just the high impulse sale of a candy bar or bottle of water. So I wasn’t surprised in my pass through an airport recently to see a vending machine fully focused on pet foods and supplies. It is creatively branded both on the outside, and with each of their products. I wasn’t there long, but did witness several transactions occurring. What’s next? I am slowly dipping my toe into the vending space with a strategic approach to execution and we are seeing success. Vending is a beast all its own so I'm thirsting for knowledge to learn all I can about our opportunities. Last week I sat on a call the National Automatic Merchandising Association hosted called the "State of Convenience Services". We looked at the four pillars of convenience including --> vending, micro markets, pantry, OCS (Office Coffee Service). Here are a few key takeaways I found interesting: 1. The industry has fully recovered (revenues) post-pandemic. 2. Micro-markets have the largest growth (with vending machines still having the largest presence in the market). Pantry has had a lesser growth based on the slow return-to-office. 3. BFY products make up a small piece of overall offerings. 4. Overall vending machines in the market are down from 4 million in 2018 to 3 million now. 5. Projected growth in this segment is expected to be close to 9% from 2023-2028. In conclusion, micro markets are where we will see the largest growth moving forward.
