In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month we’re spotlighting a recent White House Office of Management and Budget mandate that requires federal agencies to distinguish between #AANHPI groups when collecting data. The move expands the categories that people who identify as AANHPI can select on federal forms, like applications for social security cards. Additional identifying categories will now include Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Koren, Japanese, or another group. This type of data disaggregation is important because it enables precise and meaningful representation. It provides opportunities to identify needs, disparities, and challenges within specific populations; ultimately, creating more equitable public policy and even distribution of resources. Groups like AAPI Data, an organization working to ensure Asian American, Native Hawaiin, and Pacific Islander communities are recognized, respected, and prioritized, are working to ensure these new rules are implemented appropriately. They are urging the Biden administration to publish a federal data inventory, establish a centralized monitoring body, and ensure regular community input. The team marked Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May) by raising visibility for the new standard and its implementation. From March 2024, we will be coordinating a new Horizon Europe (European Commission) project to inform European Union youth policy and the NextGenerationEU recovery plan. The project will bring together experts and existing data to help guide policy decisions in building a greener, more digital, healthier and more resilient Europe. New #data will also be generated through the next iteration of our web panel, and an educational tool will be produced to make the data and analyses as accessible as possible.

Will different researchers converge on similar findings when analyzing the same data? Seventy-three independent research teams used identical cross-country survey data to test a prominent social science hypothesis: that more immigration will reduce public support for government provision of social policies. Instead of convergence, teams’ results varied greatly, ranging from large negative to large positive effects of immigration on social policy support. The choices made by the research teams in designing their statistical tests explain very little of this variation; a hidden universe of uncertainty remains. Considering this variation, scientists, especially those working with the complexities of human societies and behavior, should exercise humility and strive to better account for the uncertainty in their work. https://lnkd.in/eSQXXHsP

Leading applied behavioral science at scale - former head of BeSci at Microsoft, Clover Health, LendingTree, frog/CapGemini
In many ways, the early results shows where we need to do more work. Users want “ask an expert” but not training. Why? Because too many people are selling applied behavioral science as a silver bullet rather than the process of forging that bullet. If it continues, this will be catastrophic for the field in the long run. But it presents a short term opportunity: process coaching. If you’re not an Advisory rather than Accountable team, make sure that you’re always commenting not on the proposed intervention but rather at the method for evaluating that intervention. If you’re Partial Cycle, make sure that you’re recommending before and after steps. The more we talk about Accountable, Full-Cycle, All Projects as the desirable endpoint, the better we’ll be at creating change. And the survey is still open; perhaps more data will move the needle.
👀 We've taken a first look at what 150 people said in our cross-sector survey. Which of these would be of value to your work? Take 10 minutes to tell us about this and more at: https://lnkd.in/euqkZpwx 🔭 In the next 10 years, where is more and better behavioural research needed? 🎯 What holds you back from using or carrying out behavioural research? 🧠 Where would you like to increase your knowledge and skills? If you are in a work, study or volunteering role based in the UK and it involves using or carrying out #research about #behaviour (of any kind), this survey is for you! Don't miss out on being part of our big picture - tell us your views by 13th May.

Sociologist & Project Manager | EU Policy Analysis | Research | Advocating for Sustainable Development and Social Inclusion
Excited to have participated in the launch event for the new Migration Research to Policy Co-Lab! This innovative project aims to strengthen the connections between migration research and policy, ensuring evidence is effectively utilised. The event featured insightful discussions on how to build more impactful engagement and dissemination around research findings. A few key takeaways: 1. Timing is critical - aligning research with current policy priorities and upcoming agenda items is crucial for relevance and impact. Proactive communication with policymakers can help identify these windows. 2. Tailoring the research communication is key - providing concise summaries and actionable recommendations, rather than just lengthy reports, makes the findings more accessible and usable for policymakers. 3. Leveraging diverse channels and partnerships amplifies the reach - working with advocacy groups, media, and cross-institutional networks can help research findings indirectly influence policy through multiple pathways. 4. Building trust and direct access to policymakers enhances influence - being invited to directly present and discuss research, rather than just sending written products, can increase the impact. Excited to see the Migration Research to Policy Co-Lab put these principles into practice and help bridge the gaps between academia, policy, and the public. Looking forward to continued engagement with this important initiative. #MigrationResearch #PolicyEngagement #Research
