Our charitable partner, KEY UNLOCKING FUTURES LIMITED supports thousands of people every year in Lancashire who are homeless or in crisis. As homelessness figures are increasing, Key's Managing Director Ursula Patten shares her support for the National Housing Federation's #Planforhousing and Centrepoint's #Planforthe136k campaigns: ‘’Homelessness will continue to increase until sufficient investment in housing is made available. I welcome the #PlanForHousing and the #Planforthe136k young people facing homelessness. We need purpose-built emergency accommodation for young people and more affordable and youth-appropriate housing as solutions to support people when they leave hospital, care, or the criminal justice system. "We need a long-term #PlanForHousing to fix the UK's housing crisis." You can read more about Key Unlocking Futures and the critical support they provide to people across Lancashire, helping them to find their feet and achieve their full potential here - https://loom.ly/yJ6EOys Key Unlocking Futures joined us in 2014 and together we provide homelessness accommodation, support services, and women's refuges for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

It is time to embark on a journey of 'Systemic Change' - Ending the homelessness misery, poor outcomes and reduced quality of life will require a systemic shift! It is interesting to read about Prince Williams view point and steer on one of the major challenges for the UK economy and local councils being Homelessness. It would be interesting to see from central government - what is the 'Whole System Plan' and solutions to tackle homelessness? Collective responsibility and collective action is required at all levels from central government, to system partners, to communities and at grass root level.

LAHSA has announced The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. It will be from January 23rd thru January 25th. It will cover LA County with a few exceptions where they are conducting their own counts. In their own words: "We count to help the thousands of men, women, and families that are sleeping without a permanent home across Los Angeles County every night. The data collected is an essential component in understanding the scope and nature of homelessness in Los Angeles County and helps LAHSA and its partners deliver services where they are needed most. Homelessness is a humanitarian crisis that takes the support of our entire community to end." In every role I’ve held, from domestic violence services to youth homelessness, one thing has been clear: Housing changes everything. Once a person has housing, they have the stability they need to begin working on all other aspects of their life. #HousingChangesEverything #SupportiveHousing #NonprofitLeadership

Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson. The case aims to determine whether local governments can make it a crime for someone to live outside and unsheltered if they have no home. As this hotly contested case makes clear, the problem of homelessness is getting worse. Every year, more and more Americans experience homelessness—and cities and communities increasingly struggle to bring the crisis under control. What can we do? That’s a complicated question. But at SVDP, we believe the first (and best) solution is homelessness prevention: directing life-saving resources to people on the brink of homelessness. The 2024 PIT (point-in-time) count is coming up. After last year's count, it was reported that the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County increased by over 70% between 2017 and 2023. We know that family homelessness is solvable, but many factors are making it harder and harder for families to afford the rising cost of living in our community. I spoke with @95bFM last week about our campaign calling on Government to implement Duty to Assist legislation that would support us to end and prevent homelessness. Basically, if you and your family are experiencing homelessness, there is no clear responsibility on the state to provide you with support. This means, you can turn up to WINZ, ask for help, and there is a real possibility that you and your whānau could be turned away to sleep on the street. Duty to Assist legislation would ensure that there was a clear responsibility placed upon Government agencies to provide you with the support you need, not just to access shelter, but to gain access to permanent accommodation. Homelessness will not be ended by funding homelessness services. The mahi we do is important, but without structural change, will not end homelessness. Homelessness is not an individual issue, it's systemic, and it's structural. If we want to end homelessness we must address the structural realities that allow it to continue. Duty to Assist legislation is one piece of the puzzle that will support us to move past managing homelessness, to ending it once and for all. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cities can ban and penalize people from sleeping outdoors, including in vehicles. It is without question that Downtown Streets Team (DST) opposes this decision and will continue to support those experiencing homelessness with dignity and grace. Six out of nine justices voted to criminalize homelessness without providing solutions, despite the underwhelming amount of shelter resources across the nation. Arresting and fining individuals for trying to survive is not only cruel, but counterproductive and costly. We demand a future that protects the human rights of all people, regardless of identity or background. Sleeping is a basic need and right. Homelessness is not a crime. Stand with us against the growing cycle of homelessness. Support our efforts to end homelessness through the dignity of work and the power of community: - Donate to our cause at streetsteam.org/donate - Host a hygiene kit or warming/cooling kit drive - Join a Community Advisory Council in your area to promote the work of DST #SCOTUS #SupremeCourt #GrantPassVJohnson #EndHomelessness #HomelessnessIsNotACrime #HumanRights #HousingSolutions #HousingJustice
