The National Bridge Inventory published by the Federal Highway Administration reports that 36 percent of America’s bridges are made of steel! The most common types are box beam or girder bridges which are used for highway overpasses. Steel is truly the backbone of our infrastructure! Is this a win for America? Fabricators might win federal infrastructure projects. The Federal Highway Administration proposal scraps the requirement for 100% domestically sourced metal. Usually, when a federal agency announces the tightening of Made in America rules, metal fabricators can expect some bad news. However, that’s not true with a recent Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) proposal. FHWA’s just-proposed rule alters its domestic content requirements for manufactured highway products built with federal dollars. This announcement results from authorization in the infrastructure law passed two years ago. #America

Haigh Rail Limited has completed a rail replacement project following the discovery of a cracked/defect rail within an embedded road section of rail infrastructure. It was ascertained that the affected rail could not be plated, so an approval was given to replace a 5m section. In advance of the works, our Track team completed a survey and planning commenced with our client for a 40 hour possession with the necessary Traffic Management established by our team. Haigh Rail proceeded with road cutting parallel to either side of the defective rail, removed the existing ALH and removed the surrounding concrete utilising plant with a slew restrictor and hand tools to expose the rail and fixings. The damaged rail was cut and removed from site allowing for the installation of the new rail, which was installed to gauge and track geometry, welded and ground to specification. Rapid set concrete was installed within the exposed area to generate the required space for the inclusion of ALH. Shuttering was placed between the rail and the straight cut concrete to create a void for pouring the on-site mixed ALH. All materials, plant, tools and barriers were removed before the re-opening of the line, including the Traffic Management, which was staged throughout the works, to allow for extended use of the busy roundabout, minimising disruption to the public. Increasingly sad news out of Baltimore this morning as the MV Dali loses power and drifts into the Francis Scott Key Bridge around 1:30 am. I can’t imagine the loss of families affected and to come. The bridge's spillover effects on transit and positioning will be immediate, as it is located right outside Dundalk and will close access to the Port of Baltimore, where ~2.5% of TEUs to the US via sea have moved YTD. Key industries impacted: - Autos, both import and export side. The port handles many foreign makers, especially luxury segments. -Heavy equipment. Large construction vehicles, ag equipment, and heavy-duty trucks move in and out. -Energy. Although Baltimore does not import petroleum in large numbers from abroad, it is locally connected to the PADD1B district via tugs and barges, which connects to the Colonial Pipeline and refineries along the mid-Atlantic. Coal and Natural gas are prominent exports. - Drayage and Warehousing networks. Dozens of ships are either waiting or were destined for the port and will be rerouted, atrophying work locally. East Coast port redistribution. Equipment, sailing schedules, and domestic handling differences will begin to show where diversions go between Savannah and Newark. I've included coverage below, and more is sure to follow while the assessment of full impacts continues—my condolences to all affected. https://lnkd.in/e_NWiYnv

Key Bridge was built in 1977 - not nearly as old as other major bridges across the country. Steel bridges typically have a useful life of over 100 years. However, they’re designed in a way that one point of failure due to a crash could cascade into a total collapse. This article explains other factors (such as presence of bigger vessels since the opening of the Panama canal, and required safety structures that prevent vessels from hitting the bridges’ concrete vertical supports) that could impact other major bridges. #transportation #keybridge #fsk #infrastructure
