License to drill Catching up at Marinis Grand Caffe, Kuala Lumpur on 27 June 2024 with the highly decorated Mr. En. Fuzz Sufian BSc. , SPM, PMR, UPSR, Prakash Logan and Nanda Kumar. The smiles have returned on the faces of industry players who are once again back in the black and busy meeting the rising global demand for the black gold which fell sharply while Covid-19 was raging. Against the backdrop of economic rebound post-pandemic, geopolitical tensions and capacity constraints, consumption of fossil fuel is showing no sign of relenting despite the global move towards energy transition. Companies are having their hands full supporting oil and gas majors in their exploration and production activities which have gathered considerable pace following the reopening of economies and the full resumption of business and daily activities.

During travels to Kuala Lumpur in November I was fortunate to be able to attend the 2-day SPE Symposium on CCUS Management. Plenty of interesting talks on opportunities and challenges with developing hub-scale infrastructure for gas developments to meet the needs of a low CO2 emissions world. My previous trips to Asia earlier in the year highlighted the determination to pursue geological storage of CO2 with vigour and commitment. Rapid progress has been made to identify suitable candidates for storage and a strong link between lower emissions and accelerated field development of previously challenged hydrocarbon discoveries. PETRONAS outlined their development plan for the Kasawari gas field in the Central Luconia Province, offshore Sarawak, that needs to contend with CO2 levels of up to 40%. Likewise, Thailand’s PTTEP is partnering with Petronas to develop the Lang-Lebah sour gas project, with reported CO2 levels of 17%, also in offshore Sarawak. Collectively these projects look to monetise new gas reserves profitably for operators and to deliver great benefits to the Malaysian economy. The contrast with the situation in Australia could not be more striking where projects like Barossa are mired in regulatory uncertainty and High Court challenge. Australia’s reputation as the home of the “can-do” attitude and for decades the mantle as a reliable supplier of affordable, low carbon energy with low sovereign risk is fast becoming a thing of the past, leapfrogged by others in our neighbourhood. This will diminish the future benefits to Australia, whilst doing little to reduce our share of global CO2 emissions. The commitment and clarity of purpose shown in Asia is attracting resources at scale to underpin projects, but also to deliver the technological advantages that will solve challenges that such nascent industries commonly encounter. Its hard not to admire the progress being made in the ASEAN region and be equally alarmed how quickly Australia is being left behind. An exodus of critical skills will only exacerbate the situation in Australia leaving us instead to peddle the dream of becoming a renewable energy super-power that will be hard to deliver in a timeframe that will make a real difference. #ccus #spe #decarbonisation #co2storage #geoscience #ccs #asean #kasawari #langlebah #Malaysia #Australia #Barossa Society of Petroleum Engineers International

JERA Co., Inc. has entered into a joint study agreement (JSA) with Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) through its subsidiary, Petronas CCS Solutions (PCCSS). The collaboration aims to assess the feasibility of separating and capturing CO2 emissions from JERA's operations in Japan, followed by their transportation to Malaysia for storage. This partnership signifies a concerted effort to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions across the entire value chain, encompassing CO2 separation, transportation logistics, and storage in Malaysian gas fields. Recognising the pivotal role of CCS in addressing emissions challenges, JERA highlights the active support of governments worldwide for CCS projects, with numerous initiatives underway, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, Malaysia's abundance of potentially suitable sites for underground CO2 storage further underscores the feasibility of this collaborative endeavor. By leveraging CCS technology and cross-border cooperation, JERA and Petronas are poised to contribute significantly to global efforts aimed at mitigating climate change and advancing sustainable energy solutions. Find out more about the joint agreement here: https://lnkd.in/ggYrkA26 This partnership highlights Japan's dedication to achieving carbon neutrality and driving forward the global energy transition.
