Innovia Technology is a great workplace for people who are: a) smart b) want to work with like-minded people c) looking for variety in their work. This project, for Boehringer Ingelheim, is often hailed as the project that our team just never thought they'd get to work on! The task? To help vets and farmers deliver the highest welfare in animal care. What did we do? We gathered the core stakeholders from industry and practice to understand the barriers to gold standard care. Then we found a series of ways to resolve those barriers via our behaviour mapping process. The result? Last week, I've been invited to the periodic webinars of Merck Group "Let's talk - #Animal Affairs". The lecture was about "One #Welfare" and the implementation of the culture of #care throughout the organization. After the webinar, a roundtable has been organised with animal welfare officers and experts. It is always a very productive time when curiosity, open dialogue, motivation, excellence-oriented, absence of judgement… are shared values for discussion on areas for improvements and ethical challenges. At Merck, #Responsibility, is the 4th R at the heart of the 3Rs. #cultureofcare #3Rs #Responsibility #researchanimals #ethics

Can non-neural systems or plants exhibit sentience and consciousness? Loaded, unresolved question with clear applications in animal and lifeform welfare. The article presents an example of how biases from our most prestigious minds can influence our definitions and maybe even trickle into policies, ultimately contributing to inflexibility among socially sensitive topics. I'm proud of my friends Nicolas Rouleau and Nirosha Murugan who aren't afraid to question the nature of their reality and who come to the table with fresh perspectives and open minds. Keep exploring and pushing boundaries, friends. https://lnkd.in/e7ANK9Nz

Having had the privilege of working with Asian elephants in situ & ex situ, calling fellow elephant lovers' attention to this new study on The Elephant Welfare Assessment Tool (EWAT) - 🐘 "To evaluate the well-being of elephants engaged in tourist activities, an evidence-based tool is needed for routine assessments to identify potential welfare risks, aid in the development of better camp standards, and enable caretakers to address specific concerns" 🐘 "The Elephant Welfare Assessment Tool (EWAT) was developed for tourist camp elephants using the Five Domains Model" 🐘 "The final tool consisted of 42 questions related to 36 measures, including 18 animal-based and 18 resource-based measures within the Nutrition (n = 5), Environment (n = 11), Health (n = 10), and Behavior and Mental State (n = 10) domains" including "several criteria applicable to tourist rather than zoo venues to make it more relevant to the challenges faced by working elephants in Asia" 🐘 The tool was tested in Thailand for validity, inter-rater and test-retest reliability Ghimire R et al (2024) Development of a welfare assessment tool for tourist camp elephants in Asia.
