Celebrating my company’s 17th Anniversary today. 🎉 🎈 🎈 🥂 🍾 Coincidentally, today is also the US Army’s 249th birthday. 🫡 🇺🇸 17 years ago the veteran unemployment rate was above 20% for the youngest veterans - those who joined right out of high school and who typically completed one enlistment. Employers *wanted* to hire service members, but did not understand military culture or how to translate military resumes or assess the vast experience that comes from military service. Vets were being offered roles far below their capabilities and turnover was high. I launched my consulting firm (The Value Of a Veteran) on June 14, 2007 specifically to help companies better understand the military demographic and to design veteran talent programs that delivered results. 17 years later I am honored that more than 450 major corporations (and thousands of smaller businesses) have trusted me to assist them in their goal of improving military recruitment and retention. I am equally proud that the phrase “the value of a veteran” has become the go-to quote used by those who embrace the unique qualities veterans bring to the workplace and to the campuses where they pursue higher education. I applaud those organizations that take veteran talent programs seriously and look at it as a strategic imperative and not merely a “check the DE&I box” effort. Looking ahead to the next 17 years, The Value Of a Veteran stands ready to assist those companies that are serious about creating high ROI veteran talent strategies. My time serving as an active-duty military member is ending soon. I am 500 days away from my planned retirement date. I will be transitioning to the civilian world in 2025. Having spent more than half my life in uniform, including my entire adult life, I am nervous but also excited. All the military retirees I have spoken with have said life on the other side is great. This should put me at ease, and I suppose it does a bit, but I still have a lot of uncertainty. Rank wise, I didn’t end up where I thought I would and where I wanted, but I’m content with it. My priorities have shifted from chasing rank to being a better husband and father. I have spent too much time away from my wife. Next summer will mark 22 years for me! Where did the time go? It really flew by! It was not always easy or always fun. However, I met some great people (especially my wife), learned a ton of things, traveled the world, acquired a few certifications and degrees, helped a lot of people personally, professionally, and financially, overcame many challenges, and accomplished some really awesome things. Thank you to everyone that has helped me get to where I am today. I believe I will miss the people, camaraderie, and traveling the most. It is time to start learning how to be a civilian and have a better work-life harmony. Aside from spending more time with my wife and daughter, I don't know what I want to do after the military. I don't know where we will live in the short term. Deciding where to live is causing me the most stress. How do we choose ONE place to settle down? Transitioning from military service to civilian life is a significant and often challenging journey for many veterans. As someone who has walked this path, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of thorough planning for this transition. During my time in the military, I developed skills and experiences that were invaluable. However, stepping out of uniform revealed a different battlefield—one where the rules were not as clear, and the support structures I had grown accustomed to were no longer in place. One of the biggest challenges I faced was translating my military experience into a language that civilian employers could understand. Crafting a resume that effectively communicated my skills was a daunting task. Additionally, adapting to a civilian work culture, which often felt less structured and more ambiguous, required significant adjustment. Networking was another hurdle. In the military, relationships and hierarchies are clear-cut, but in the civilian world, building a professional network from scratch felt overwhelming. I learned that connecting with fellow veterans and finding mentors who had successfully made the transition were crucial steps in navigating this new terrain. Financial planning also posed a challenge. The steady paycheck and benefits provided by the military were no longer guaranteed. Ensuring I had a solid financial plan and understanding my VA benefits were essential to maintaining stability during this period of change. For those still in uniform, I strongly advise starting your transition plan well before your service ends. Leverage resources like the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), engage with veteran support organizations, and begin building your civilian network early. This preparation can make the difference between a smooth transition and a turbulent one. Remember, transitioning out of the military is not just about finding a job; it's about finding your new mission and purpose in life. By planning ahead and seeking out the right resources and support, you can set yourself up for success in this new chapter. Transitioning from military to civilian life is a road less straightforward than many anticipate. It's a common misconception that the rigorous discipline, structure, and strong work ethic forged in service members will make the shift to civilian employment and life seamless. Yes, these are invaluable traits, but the reality of this metamorphosis is often layered with complexity.   The military is an environment with its own unique culture, language, and way of life. When service members step out of this realm, they face a world that operates on a different rhythm. Civilian workplaces may appreciate the discipline and work ethic that veterans bring, but they often require a different approach to communication, problem-solving, and hierarchy. The camaraderie and shared purpose that are the bedrock of military life don't always have a direct counterpart in civilian life, which can lead to a sense of isolation for some veterans.   Moreover, finding a new purpose can be challenging. In the military, the mission is clear, and every task, no matter how small, contributes to a larger goal. In civilian life, the "mission" may not be as clear-cut, and the impact of one's work may not feel as immediate or significant.   It's important for employers and society at large to recognize these challenges and to provide support and understanding to those making this significant life change. And for veterans, acknowledging that this transition is more than just a change of clothes—it's a change in identity and community—is a crucial step. By preparing for this shift, reaching out for support, and embracing lifelong learning, veterans can find new and fulfilling paths in civilian life.   The discipline, structure, and work ethic learned in the military are undeniable strengths, but we must all understand that the journey from service to civilian life is not just a change of job—it's a profound life transition that requires support, patience, and understanding. #Veterans #MilitaryTransition #CivilianLife #CareerChange
