These are the two most important technological things I use at my internship. The screen monitors the animals vitals. Such as heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. This is very important because we have to look and write down their vitals every five minutes. If the numbers are low or high we have to inform the vet because there may be a complication with the surgery. Most heart rates of the animals go up because although they can’t feel the surgery happening their body still reacts. Beside the monitor is where we control their anesthesia. While we are checking vitals they can tell us if the patient is waking up or if we can lower the amount of anesthesia. The silver dial goes from 1-5 which we change during surgery. These things are very important and we wouldn’t be able to do surgery’s or dentals without them. After watching Dr. McGuire perform an amputation surgery, I was interested in reading an article to coordinate what I witnessed with medical terms. I found an article on the IVIS website whose mission statement is to strive for better animal care and medical knowledge. “Amputation of the Forelimb,” by Daly W.R whose current position is studying techniques in small animal surgeries, gives a detailed description of why amputations are needed, preoperative considerations, and the actual amputation process itself. Amputations are primary treatments for irreparable fractures or soft tissue injuries. Other reasons amputations might be considerable are neurological lesions, severe infections, and sometimes due to the unfortunate situation where the owner can’t afford to save the limb through a more pricey procedure. Before amputation surgeries take place, it’s crucial for veterinarians to be well informed of their patients’ physical status. Some of the things they keep in mind are the patients’ hematocrit and plasma protein levels due to the amount of blood that can be lost in surgeries like these. Two methods of amputation procedures are forelimb and forequarter. Forelimb amputation can be done through and underneath the scapulohumeral joint. During this procedure it’s necessary to provide electrolyte solutions during and after the surgery. With forequarter amputation the removal of the scapula is easier because the major vessels and nerves are more visible. The bone cutting instruments are also not required for this amputation process. The goal in forequarter amputation surgeries is to remove the entire pectoral limb. Technology is used in almost every aspect of the veterinary industry. Helping keep pet healthy and know what is going on with them before symptoms appear. I take interest in the incubator, it is made to keep pets warm after surgery. Many animals have issues with keeping their temperature while under anesthesia and while waking up from it. Incubators help a lot with regulating their temperature after anesthesia and keep a controlled environment for them to recover. At my veterinary internship, technology is an essential part of each day.  Whether it is contacting clients, performing surgery, or keeping records during appointments, technology is utilized.  Computers are used in many ways, one of which is scheduling.  On every computer there is a program that has a schedule each day.  This includes when each client has been scheduled, as well as which technician and doctor will be managing that appointment.  Another way computers are utilized is the processing and organization of patient information.  In a veterinary clinic, it is essential to have the information of owners, as well as past medical history for pets.  Computers help the organization of this layered information, as well as allow for quick access during appointments or otherwise.  One software I found particularly interesting was used for medicine calculations.  For each surgery, depending on the species and weight of pets, different amounts of various medications are needed.  By putting in the weight and species of the animal into a simple program, the medications are automatically calculated.  Aside from computers, there are also many interesting ways technology is used.  For example, there is a machine for blood work that will run multiple tests in a matter of minutes, ensuring pets are healthy enough for surgery.  Technology is also used to weigh pets, take temperatures, perform dental work, surgeries, and sanitize equipment.  In this medical setting, technology has become a very important and useful tool, utilized throughout each day.  Nebo School District CTE Internships Christine Thomas #nebointerns #nebo #cteinternships #cteintern #MMHS #mmhsintern #internships #veterinary #science

Moving towards a new era of education? Researchers at the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico evaluated the use of distance learning to teach basic veterinary surgery principles to 4th-year students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a virtual learning platform with asynchronous and synchronous activities, they found significant improvements in student test scores from pre- to post-course, indicating the potential effectiveness of this distance learning model for teaching foundational surgical concepts. The study provides important insights into adapting clinical and hands-on training to virtual formats. The findings suggest distance learning can be an effective complement to in-person instruction for this type of subject matter, warranting further research on leveraging technology to enhance veterinary education.
