So far in early 2024 two *large* tech PR agencies asked if Crackle PR is open to selling 🤔 SPOILER ALERT: Um, hell to the no. We’re just getting started! (Plus, you’d miss my ability to say what I *really think* on LinkedIn ) 😉 But, interestingly, a couple of boutique PR agencies have also sent out feelers about me potentially buying them/their clients. One in San Francisco, the other London. They weren’t the right fit, for a variety of reasons. Just kicking tires. But all of this activity is telling… I’ve seen this movie before: **consolidation is coming** And what it means is twofold: 1. There will be a ton of PR agency turnover/attrition this year. Like, a metric sh*t ton. And your PR team will likely change a lot, particularly at the biggest shops. 2. It means we’re at the bottom of the downturn in tech specifically and PR generally. The big guns are tryna buy low. It’s always darkest before the dawn. By mid-year we’ll begin to see PR agencies hiring in earnest again, as b2b companies pull their respective heads out of the sand because borrowing rates get cheaper. Buckle your chinstraps, agency owners and the marketers who hire us. It’s about to get real. This is the way ✊ #publicrelations 👇

"If you are, say, $500k in ARR, you can’t hire a CMO that needs a team of 15-20 around her/him. You just don’t have the capital or infrastructure. But what I’ve learned time and time again is you need to hire the most senior marketer you can that will still do the work. Why? You need someone that will hold a number, a commitment. To leads, to pipeline, to opportunities, to revenue. Whatever stage of the funnel makes sense for you, you need someone that can own it." Read more in SaaStr https://lnkd.in/g9t8pJbf

OK, I've been thinking a LOT lately about: 🔹 How can CEOs and investors who are hiring new CMOs for SaaS companies get on the same page about the current marketing maturity? 🔹 How can they see at a glance what work REALLY needs to be done to level up marketing? 🔹 How can they get real about how long that will REALLY take… and how much it costs? 😁 Here's the start of a framework… The idea is that this is a tool for prioritization and budgeting. And a reality check for when the CMO is asked to 'get Rome built in a day,' especially when foundational/operational elements are not even in place yet. Would love your thoughts on how this could be used. For instance: Have the CEO fill it out. Have someone in marketing fill it out. Have the candidate fill it out once they have gone through a few interviews. And compare and contrast. Likely there's a lot of discussion on what it means for, say, the website to be 'fully mature' and what 'half-mature' means for ROI measurement or any of these things. So this is not a standalone. Your thoughts on how/when this framework could be best used in the CMO recruiting process? Thanks! And… 🙏 to some of my recent CMO candidates who have helped shape this. (You know who you are!)

In business, marketing is key to growth and success. But not all companies need or can afford a full-time marketing director. Enter the fractional marketing director: a flexible, cost-effective solution for time-strapped owners, those lacking expertise, or teams needing guidance. Here are my top tips for hiring a fractional marketing director: 🤔 Assess Your Needs: Evaluate your current marketing efforts, team capabilities, and business objectives to identify gaps. ⚖️ Weigh Costs and Benefits: Consider the cost-effective expertise of a fractional marketing director without the full-time expenses. 🔎 Define and Integrate: Clearly outline their role, set measurable goals, and ensure they fit well with your company culture.
