After participating in a workshop organized by several groups including Time2Shine Healthy Cornwall, Cornwall Down's Syndrome Support Group - CDSSG Talk more Cornwall CIC, Disability Cornwall & I0S The National Down Syndrome Policy Group, I am delighted to witness a broader segment of our community engaging in politics. Positive changes are being made in voting processes to better accommodate individuals with disabilities. Electoral officers are now trained to assist disabled voters, and friends or caregivers can accompany them to the Polling Station. Planning is crucial if reaching the polling station is challenging; allow ample time and remember to bring your polling card. Various forms of identification are accepted for collecting your voting slip. It is disheartening to hear about the difficulties faced by our communities with disabilities due to council cutbacks and the strain on family members providing around-the-clock care. I empathize with the stress they endure and wish I could offer more support, but for now, I am here to listen. The eagerness of individuals with disabilities to engage in politics is truly inspiring, especially in a climate where apathy is prevalent. Those who are most vulnerable in society are advocating for change to enhance their quality of life. https://lnkd.in/eaPh8a9e

For the new issue of Impact magazine from the Institute on Community Integration, I spoke with an experienced group of leaders in the disability services community—direct support professionals, personal care assistants, agency executives, union organizers, disability advocates, and people receiving services—to discuss whether unionization can finally lift poverty-level wages and benefits in the field. Please read the discussion and share your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/gMGd5NYv #directsupportprofessional, #unionization

No federal funding for DeafBlind community in the Hunter or NSW Last week CDAH were advised that the DeafBlind Hub and Community Connections Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) projects would not be funded after June 30. This loss is a huge blow to the Deafblind community and people with a disability who live in closed systems throughout NSW. This is simply not good enough. Please join Community Disability Alliance - CDAH in the fight for real grassroots voice choice and control for those who's voices are least heard.

LLM- International Comparative Disability Law and Public Policy, Member of Disability Advisory Committee-IHREC, Disability Activist and Advocate
Mental Health is the one disability that is rarely represented by disabled organisations nor included in discussions and representations to politicians. There are reservations on Articles 12 and 14 of UNCRPD pertaining to people with psychosocial and mental health disabilities which sets us apart from other people with disabilities which is contrary to Article 5 of UNCRPD-Equality and Non- Discrimination. These reservations further enshrines inequality and discrimination and promotes continued stigma and furthers the ignorance surrounding mental health. Mental health difficulties are also associated as being a part of most disabilities and is interrelated and interconnected and can't separate the body from the mind at the neck. Disability is represented as the physical and what is visible and noticeable and many disabilities may be invisible or hidden because of the stigma and discrimination attached to them. There are innate fears surrounding mental health disabilities mainly due to the coverage they receive especially from the media and the headlines attached to untoward events in society which deliberately pinpoints and aims contempt at a marginalised minority but a very significant minority and cohort.
I met with Simon Harris Anne Rabbitte T.D. and Minister Rodrick O Gorman as party of a delegation from Disability Federation of Ireland and other umbrella groups yesterday. We had a very honest, productive meeting about ‘Disabilty Matters’. We talked about matters relating to disability, but I came away believing disabilty matters to this government- it really matters! The ambition to do better was very clear. It is crucial that we continue to work together to address the issues that impact on the 20% of the population. Our friends, neighbours, colleagues, peers and families.

Just published, my recent report showing that Needs Assessment and Service Coordination providers (NASCs) have been chronically underfunded for disability services, with recent uplifts barely covering the effects of inflation, and failing to account for the growing complexity of their client base or increasing expectations of tailored service delivery in line with the principles of Enabling Good Lives (EGL). The data shows that the NASCs have largely protected clients from the impact of underfunding by implementing efficiency improvements, but with these now exhausted, access and service sustainability are under threat. Over 90 percent of New Zealand’s disability community relies on the NASCs to access support, so underfunding of these services will have a widespread impact. Simone Newsham https://lnkd.in/gU5W-yNQ
