The 2023 matric results in South Africa show a nominal improvement but reveal significant underlying issues in the education system, which are hindering the development of much-needed professionals in fields like engineering, science, and mathematics. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 🔼 The overall pass rate increased from 80.1% in 2022 to 82.9% in 2023. 🔼 Bachelor’s degree qualification rates rose to 40.9%, up from 38.4%. 🔼 The maths pass rate improved from 55% in 2022 to 63.5% in 2023. 🔼 There was an increase in schools with pass rates above 80%, and 62 of the top 110 performers were social grant beneficiaries. Despite these improvements, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: ❌ Approximately 40% of students who started Grade 1 in 2012 did not make it to matric in 2023. ❌ Maths enrolment decreased from 50.8% in 2019 to 38.7% in 2023. ❌ The gap between maths and maths literacy enrolment widened significantly. ❌ Only 24% of matrics passed maths in both 2019 and 2023. ❌ Distinction rates in maths are extremely low, with less than 1% of the original Grade 1 cohort achieving this in 2023. These figures suggest a worrying trajectory 📉 for South Africa’s education system, particularly in producing graduates equipped for tertiary education and careers in critical fields. There is little doubt that radically improving the education system is the key to more jobs and faster growth. Without a quantum improvement in the quality of school passes, especially in subjects such as maths, South Africa will be unable to fuel a modern, fast-growing economy. #southafrica #education #matric2023 #stem #science #engineering #mathematics #mathematicseducation #economy https://lnkd.in/d6u65Mpm

Here’s what international students say makes a good lecturer International higher education in the United Kingdom is not new. However, with the return of the graduate route visa, the sector has witnessed an unprecedented surge of students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria over the last two years, whereas historically China had been the dominant sending country of international students to the UK. With this sudden shift in the demographics of international students, linguistically and culturally, driven by real and practical questions that we face as teaching staff, we were curious about what makes university lecturers good teachers in the eyes of both teaching staff and international students. Moving away from a typical student-focused research or staff-focused project, we wanted our research to understand the convergence or divergence of the two perspectives. Our goal was to understand the needs of international students better in order to enhance their student experience in the UK. We also aimed to provide empirical findings for future staff development. ADMISSION: INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE & POST GRADUATE ADMISSIONS. THOUGHTS: Universities in Europe, Asia and America clamour and scramble to admit international students into their institutions, seeking research students too from all over the world, why (I won't answer that now) or why not universities, colleges and technical schools in Nigeria? REVIEW. In time past, schools like Unilag, Ifé (OAU), UI, UNN and Yabatech attracted international students from different parts of Africa and outside; some still do. OPPORTUNITIES 1. Private Universities in Nigeria should take cupid advantages of this. You can admit quantum of international students from everywhere in the world. NOTE: UTME results is not a requirement for such admission; only O'Level results that can be verified. 2. International students will not be mobilized for NYSC at the end of their studies. They only came for the knowledge and it's evidence of acquisition, the Certificate. 3. They will be bringing in foreign earnings and boosting your GDP. 4. Your global ranking and ratings will definitely rise. The season is open now, tush up your web presence, re-invent your digital face, reactivate your hotlines and get ready, and go !!!! . #admission #admissionofficer #university #universities #college #colleges #higherinstitution #aau #iau
