This week VIA welcomed Dr. Patrick McGreevy, founder of Essential for Living (EFL) curriculum, to host an extensive workshop for our entire staff as part of our commitment to professional growth. EFL is a well-regarded curriculum, based on research, that is consistent with the values and goals of VIA. It offers systematic tools to focus on skills important to quality of life across the lifespan. The mission of EFL is to provide children and adults with moderate-to-severe disabilities, including but not limited to autism, a comprehensive curriculum referenced to ‘quality of life’, rather than typical development or academic standards, along with evidence-based teaching ‘and measurement‘ strategies and procedures, that result in the dignity and quality of life these children and adults deserve.

📣📢Save the date! Join us on February 1st for a virtual training on An overview of Essential for living!!! Date: 2/1/24 Time: 12:00 PM Location: Virtual (CalABA Zoom) Title of Presentation: An Overview of Essential for Living Abstract: Most children with autism, along with other moderate-to-severe developmental disabilities, like Down syndrome and Angelman syndrome, even with intensive, high-quality intervention, will not ‘catch up’ to their typically-developing peers and will not acquire a repertoire of formal academic skills. In spite of this fact, many ABA programs continue to use developmental curricula with 10, 11, and 12-year old children who read on a first-grade level with very little comprehension, who are ‘stuck in level 2 of the VB-MAPP’, and who will never be asked to respond to feature-function-class questions at any other time in their lives. These learners need instruction referenced to quality of life, rather than developmental milestones or academic standards. Essential for Living has this point of reference. The presenter will provide an overview of this communication, behavior, and functional skills curriculum and assessment. Learning Objectives: With regard to Essential for Living (EFL),the participants will be familiarized with: What is EFL (its approach and pillars) Who is best served with the curriculum and assessment The structure and content of EFL Details on how to register will be coming soon!

Our report on preschool curriculum was recently featured in a policy brief from the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER). The brief states, "'A New Vision for High-Quality Preschool Curriculum' has brought increased attention to two issues 1: the type of curriculum used and the extent to which curriculum (or practice generally) attends to linguistic and cultural diversity, including supports for dual-language learners." It discusses the report and explores data from a 2010 survey of early educators about the type of curriculum they use and their attention to children’s home language and culture. The brief concludes with a call for more research into what is happening in classrooms today, particularly in those that combine comprehensive and domain-specific curricula. I recently conducted a training session for teachers on multilingual education, focusing on pedagogy and classroom strategies. Incorporating multilingual education is crucial as per the National Education Policy (NEP), as it enhances cognitive abilities, cultural awareness, and academic performance among young learners. Here’s a brief outline in PPT covering key aspects of multilingual education for primary grades in schools. If you're interested in a detailed PPT, please comment below, and I'll create one soon! #MultilingualEducation #TeacherTraining #Education #PrimaryEducation #Pedagogy #ClassroomManagement

When we talk of 'equality' in education and 'equity' in education, what is the difference between the two terms? 'Equality' refers to the equal opportunities given to children to receive education . 'Equity' refers to making each develop the competency required as per the learning area based on the age and grade level. We all are practicing equality but when it comes to equity, there are challenges that needs to be addressed. One of the solution to the above scenario is introducing CBL (Competency Based Learning) in schools and another is to introduce 'Differentiated Instruction' in daily classroom teaching to ensure skill building in each child as per his / her age and grade in different learning domains. Understanding the importance of the same, I am organising a workshop of K-12 educators to enable them in incorporating DI in their daily classroom teaching which will ultimately lead to the aim of CBL. The workshop is scheduled on 5th November, SUNDAY. Please find the registration form: https://lnkd.in/dG7KmQWY Note: The details of the workshop will be shared with interested candidates who will register themselves. Up skill yourself to produce a significant impact in your profession and transform lives! #Teacherstraining #mastertrainer #workshop #Differentiatedinstruction

Child-led play is central to our curriculum and pedagogy in early years. Through play our children explore and develop learning experiences, which help them make sense of the world. They have the opportunity to practise skills, develop ideas and think creatively alongside other children as well as individually. The children communicate with others as they investigate and solve problems. That is why we provide an enabling environment, resources and experiences that enable children to make progress in their development and learning and allow them to learn through exploration, investigation and first-hand experiences. #LESAmazingLearning #LESGettingBetter #ISPFamily
