There are a number of arms to this issue. Undoubtedly we require cultures and workload management structures that support collegiality, inter-professional collaboration, and institutional challenge and accountability that leads to the kind of change that optimizes excellence in patient care. The second, and not to be considered secondary in priority to the former, requires a concerted understanding and integration of the ‘experience’ of professional role transition for healthcare professionals. The experience of transition significantly influences and impacts on the new professionals assimilation into their new work context.

An interesting study on the frequency concerning rate of aggressive incidents experienced by healthcare workers (over once instance every 40 hours). Not surprised by this finding. A data analysis performed by Strategic Security Management Consulting at an 11 hospital system in a large metropolitan area measured 1 incident of workplace violence occurred every 30 minutes (total comprised of both verbal and physical incidents). One other relevant point from the article on the study published by Becker’s is that the data was collected in 2017. During and post pandemic, hospital incidents of workplace violence increased exponentially by 25%-40% depending upon the facility and reporting methodology. I had the privilege of attending a thought-provoking symposium on supporting clinicians in the aftermath of a medical error or adverse event. The discussions highlighted the critical need for a culture of safety, transparency, and compassion in healthcare. We explored the emotional toll of medical errors on clinicians, patients, and families, and the importance of providing psychological support and resources to prevent burnout and promote resilience.
