Primary care, lifestyle medicine, shared medical appointments (SMAs), and clinical innovation to improve health and prevent disease
Before today, I didn't realized that the Obesity Medicine Association features #LifestyleMedicine in 3 of its 4 pillars of #obesity treatment. I am putting together my slide deck for the Harvard Medical School Blackburn Obesity Medicine Course on #LifestyleMedicine and #SharedMedicalAppointments. I look forward to highlighting that the #implementation of #LifestyleMedicine - especially in busy, overworked, understaffed #primarycare practices where most #obesitymedicine takes place - will rely on the rapid development and scaling of #SharedMedicalAppointments. Let's take the burden off of our Obesity Medicine colleagues! Our Massachusetts General Hospital Healthy Lifestyle Program is launching a 4-part #LifestyleMedicine #SharedMedicalAppointment series this fall - integrating #GLP1 medication management - and the curriculum will be available for licensing by others who are interested in making an impact in obesity management by focusing on the #LifestyleMedicine pillars highlighted by the Obesity Medicine Association. As major contributors to poor health outcomes, overweight and obesity plague the modern world, particularly the United States. Annals of Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians assembled an astute panel of experts to discuss current clinical challenges in the care of persons with overweight and obesity. "Patients with overweight and obesity suffer from stigma. It is not only the lay public but also clinicians who contribute to this stigma. Physicians and other clinicians must approach discussions of healthy body size with patients without judgment and must avoid blaming and shaming patients. It is also important not to reflexively attribute a patient's presenting symptoms to their weight without thoughtful consideration of other causes. Otherwise, patients may avoid seeking care altogether, putting them at risk for suboptimal management of not only obesity but also associated comorbidities. When discussing obesity with patients, we need to recognize its complex pathophysiology rather than using language that implies that obesity is a condition that patients bring on themselves."
