The RHC is pleased to share our position paper on the national Pharmacare Act. As a significant milestone in the evolution of Canada’s universal health care system, the Pharmacare Act offers the prospect of broader coverage of some existing medicines, which in turn should lead to improved health outcomes and greater health equity. Although the 2024 Federal Budget announced $1.5B over 5 years to support the national Pharmacare Act, a more ambitious program will ultimately require significantly more funding ramped up at a faster rate than currently anticipated. Apart from increased funding, the RHC is also eager to better understand the principles, strategy and criteria that will underpin any expansion beyond contraceptives and medicines for diabetes.
