Obesity is undoubtedly a chronic and recurrent multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive therapeutic approach. People living with obesity need comprehensive care based on understanding their individual problems and the causes leading to overweight and the development of obesity. The proposed therapy must be accompanied by a professional trained in obesity management. This requires a paradigm shift: from weight loss to managing the root causes of weight gain, in order to prevent relapses and avoid physical, mental and social complications.

How do people feel about their #obesity care when they have other chronic diseases? Check out our most recent publication in Obesity Pillars, asking over 2500 people with obesity to answer this question... Heres a sneak peek of the data: 1. 📊 26.4% reported a diagnosis of obesity, yet just 9.2% received medically supervised treatment. 2. 🩺 55% believe obesity complicates other chronic diseases, with 39% stating their conditions worsened due to obesity. 3. 🤔 Although 54% recognize obesity as a chronic disease, a staggering 78% feel it's solely their responsibility to manage it. Only 33% found success with treatments. (just a reflection of internalized bias IMO) Congrats Obesity Canada – Obésité Canada Ian Patton Ximena Ramos Salas Sanjeev Sockalingam Brad H. and the whole team on putting this together! #ObesityAwareness #Healthcare #ChronicDiseaseManagement

Adding "O" for Obesity to ABCDES in Diabetes Management: Focusing on Upstream Approaches! In diabetes management, the traditional ABCDES framework has long been a cornerstone. It’s time to introduce a critical component: “O” for “Obesity.” Addressing obesity early and effectively is key to preventing diabetes and managing its progression, shifting towards upstream approaches that tackle the root causes. Why Focus on Obesity? Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. By targeting obesity, we can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of diabetes. Early intervention in obesity management can lead to better long-term health outcomes and reduce the burden on healthcare systems. Ania Jastreboff, MD, PhD #ADASciSessions #ADA2024
