Does NASA Pivot as a National Security Organization? The answer is not as straightforward as it may seem. In today’s era of strategic competition, the role of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is more pivotal than ever before. While some may view NASA purely as a science and exploration agency, its historical roots and legislative mandates tell a different story—one where national security plays a crucial role. The United States’ National Security Strategy highlights the ongoing “strategic competition” with adversaries employing a mix of military and civil power to threaten strategic interests, aiming to win without direct conflict. GSR Author Peter Garretson discusses how in the post-Cold War era, NASA continued to play a security role, focusing on security through diplomacy and preventing the proliferation of ballistic missile technology. Defined in Title 51 of the United States Code, NASA’s crucial mission includes ensuring the United States’ preeminent position in space, leading in space science and technology, and utilizing space activities for long-term benefits. This underscores NASA as a national security organization, tasked with pursuing American strategic objectives below the threshold of armed conflict. Highly Recommend! Well worth the reading but even more important following … and pursuing the strategy with National commitment! This more clearly points the way of a strong and required leadership by our Department of Defense and US Space Force - aligned with commercial industry. A NASA. Led program for civil return to the Moon and cis-lunar region is important, but should be science-focused. This strategy rightly points out a required leadership role in development of important Cislunar capabilities!

The Airbus-built European Service Module gets its very own tailor-made insulation suit!🪡 Did you know that some parts of the #ESM require hand-stitching? #TeamAirbus recently sewed on an essential part of the ESM 2 that insulates the spacecraft: the Flexible External Insulation mats (FEl). These thermal mats protect the rear part of the Service Module from the heat radiation of the main engine and auxiliary engines. Why does it have to be hand-stitched and not pre-stitched by a machine?🧵 Well, considering the ESM is 4.5 metres in diameter, it is simply too big! Russia, and China in particular, have had seamless cooperation between civilian and military agencies for expanding the envelope of human spaceflight for years. NASA and DoD as customer model could benefit tremendously to include capable commercial entities as catalysts in this proposed shift into high gear. In fact, The New Era in Deep Space Exploration document from the last administration provides an overview of how government agencies are interconnected and can benefit from such synergies.
