Broad commodity markets have experienced a pullback over the last three months, with industrial metals, energy, and grains being hit particularly hard. For industrial metals, the economic growth engine in China has continued to sputter, reducing physical demand for commodities like copper and aluminum. While fundamentals in the copper market seem to have moved into better balance and we remain optimistic about its long term outlook, two major macro headwinds are hanging over the market. Check out the below note from Viewpoint Investment Partners to explore how the U.S. election and the start of a rate cutting cycle from the Federal Reserve will be crucial catalysts affecting the direction of industrial metal prices in the short-term. #federalreserve #monetarypolicy #election #commodities #industrialmetals #copper #tariffs #China

Copper prices rallied this week on continued hopes that Chinese demand will recover. In an annual government meeting this week, Chinese authorities provided little detail on how they plan to grow industries that are large metals consumers, but some analysts believe that demand will recover in the coming months. In a note late this week, Citigroup stated that Chinese demand “could be quickly revitalized by strong credit prints for February and March and/or meaningful detail of support for metals-intensive sectors like property and infrastructure.” Some supply issues have sprung up recently, further fueling the bullishness. But as this rally loses momentum, the question remains—can copper prices continue to hold up in a challenging environment? 💼📊 The Metal Intelligence Centre (MIC) dives into the latest trends and assesses where copper might be headed. Copper & Commodities: The Trade Everyone Missed Last Night Commodities like Copper and Iron Ore are dipping due to a lack of stimulus from China’s latest economic meeting. If you missed last night’s leveraged short trades, it’s not too late to take action. Consider looking into ETFs or options markets for exposure. A solid play last night would have been buying AUD put options to manage the downside risk. Keep an eye on any further developments from China, as this could continue to weigh on commodities in the short term.
