You might have heard of Masungi Georeserve, co-founded by #AshokaFellow Ann Dumaliang, as a must-visit spot in Rizal or from the headlines covering the many threats it is facing. But what is it like to be a ranger of the park? Learn firsthand from Nilbert about Masungi, his challenges as an indigenous guardian of Nature, and the importance of preserving the area for future generations:

Keeping all the vessels that come and go from Port Taranaki safe is paramount. Earlier this summer, we installed a new ‘northern cardinal marker’, which is placed just outside Otaikokako Reef – a site of significance - and indicates to harbour users the northern extremity of the reef and the danger of rocks to the south that become exposed during low water. The two-triangle shape at the top of the pole warns vessels to ‘stay north’, away from the reef. At night a light sequence, activated by a sensor, provides the same message. At the request of the Taranaki Regional Council and the harbourmaster, Port Taranaki funded the installation of the new pole as the existing marker is failing and could potentially cause navigational and safety issues. The new marker is pile driven, about four metres deep, into the sand sea floor only, to prevent any excavation being needed and to ensure minimal disturbance to the site. New Plymouth Underwater Ltd carried out the installation and did a great job managing the challenging tidal range. For now, the old marker remains in place, and this will be reviewed periodically. #ports #shipping #safety #navigation
