🌍✨ Let's celebrate World Wildlife Day! As we commemorate the incredible biodiversity that enriches our planet, let's also raise awareness that now more than ever, wildlife is at risk, and efforts to protect it must be intensified. In Europe, 20% of animal and plant species are threatened with #extinction. While the European Parliament has recently passed legislation on #naturerestoration (which still needs the Council's approval), much still needs to be done at the national and local levels to prevent the loss of wildlife. Although tourism is often mentioned as potentially beneficiall for sustainability, its negative externalities still outweigh its potential positive contributions. Today is Natura 2000 day! 🌟🌳 💚 Natura 2000 is the the largest network of protected areas in the world: it was created 32 years ago today and over 27 000 nature sites are protected through this network by EU legislation, like the Birds and Habitats Directives. The sites cover almost one-fifth of land and one-tenth of surrounding seas, including several strictly protected nature reserves, and habitat types such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, and coastal and marine habitats. Three projects from BirdLife Partners are currently running as finalists for the European Natura 2000 Award! 🐺 Natuurpunt, BirdLife Flanders, formed the Wolf Fencing Team Belgium (WFTB) to aid over 1,080 livestock owners. This success inspired similar efforts in neighboring regions, fostering harmony between humans and wolves. 🌊 DOPPS - Birdlife Slovenia is restoring the River Stržen after it was altered for agricultural purposes in the 20th century, rerouting a 2.1 km stretch of the river back to its natural meandering flow. 🦉 Through their Nature Guardian project, SEO/BirdLife and SPEA - Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves have trained over 1,500 law enforcement agents and created tools to catch and report environmental crimes in Spain and Portugal, reducing wildlife deaths by 62% in Spain and increasing the detection of environmental crimes by over 100% in Spain and over 80 % increase in Portugal. 🏆 Tune in next week on the 29th of May to find out the winners here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxbz-BeK #Natura2000 #RestoreNature #ConservationSuccess 📸 Bittern in flight over Ključi (Photo by: Jože Papež). The Great Bittern is one of the various species being brought back by the DOPPS project in Slovenia; their nests are now thriving across an additional 215 hectares.

This is an excellent move on the part of the Greek Government. Thanks to Neil Melleney for sharing. The proposed Ionian marine national park will cover almost 12% of Greek territorial waters, safeguarding sea mammals like sperm whales, striped dolphins and the vulnerable Mediterranean monk seal and the South Aegean MPA, which covers 6.61% of Greek territorial waters. The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, told delegates at the Our Ocean conference in Athens on Tuesday: “We’ve established two additional marine national parks, one in the Ionian and one in the Aegean, increasing the size of our marine protected areas by 80% and covering one third of our marine territorial waters. “We will ban bottom trawling in our national parks by 2026 and in all marine protected areas by 2030.” He said he would also establish a state-of-the-art surveillance system, including drones, to enforce the ban. +++ This last point deserves comment because whilst there are many Marine Protected Areas in the world, these are often more impressive on paper. If you follow the link below you can explore the MPAs around British Coastal Waters. The difference between what is protected and what is enforced is of crucial significance. In the UK waters, I note that there are 178 MPAs, covering 51% of inshore and 37% of offshore waters. And yet, from Goverment data, it is clear that Bottom towed fishing gear [is] prohibited over reef habitats in 13 marine protected areas. Exploring Wildlife in the Corners of Luxembourg In the quest for wild experiences, we often think of exotic destinations like Africa or South America. However, sometimes it's enough to venture into nearby natural settings, as I recently discovered in a small nature reserve here in Luxembourg, a country seldom associated with biodiversity and untamed encounters. It was around five in the evening when I set up a camouflage tent, hoping to capture the perfect moment of a wild animal. That's when nature bestowed upon me an unexpected occurrence. A furious Eurasian Jay (Garrulus grandarius) perched in front of me, on the bare branch of a bush, devouring its prey of the day. In just seconds, I could observe part of its diet: a small rodent hung lifeless from its robust beak. Although the scene was brief, I managed to capture it through my lens, turning it into a field trophy and a valuable documentary archive. This experience filled me with joy as it revealed the ferocity of this small feathered predator. Despite its common association with acorn consumption, this Eurasian Jay demonstrated a carnivorous diet that I was unaware of until that moment. It was a revelation, witnessing this infallible killer displaying its cruel brutality. In nature, the life of some implies the death of others, an age-old saying that became tangible before my eyes. Once again, nature followed its course, providing me with a memorable moment that I share with my kind followers. With this post, I hope to contribute to the understanding of the behavior of certain species inhabiting our surroundings, which we don't always have the fortune to know in detail. International Snow Leopard Day is celebrated annually on October 23 to raise awareness about the endangered snow leopard and the conservation efforts needed to protect this species. Snow leopards play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of their mountainous habitats, which are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade. Several initiatives have been launched globally to save snow leopards, including the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program, launched in 2013 by 12 range countries and international organizations. GSLEP focuses on transboundary cooperation, research, and funding to protect the species. The ZeroPlastic Movement, a global initiative to eliminate plastic waste, is inherently linked to snow leopard conservation. It aims to reduce pollution in oceans and other ecosystems, but its relevance extends to snow leopards' mountainous habitats. Single-use plastics accumulate in snow leopard habitats, degrading the environment and contaminating water sources vital to wildlife and local communities. The ZeroPlastic Movement promotes the use of sustainable materials, helping local communities living near snow leopard habitats adopt eco-friendly practices. On International Snow Leopard Day, supporters are encouraged to reduce plastic use, support conservation projects, and spread awareness about the plight of snow leopards and the impact of plastic waste on ecosystems. By adopting sustainable practices and reducing plastic waste, we can help safeguard the snow leopard's habitat, ensuring that future generations can witness the beauty of these majestic creatures in the wild.
