Consolidation is a crucial process in geotechnical engineering that involves the gradual reduction in the volume of a saturated soil due to the expulsion of water from its pores. This process occurs when the soil is subjected to a load, leading to an increase in effective stress and a decrease in the void ratio. We can see here the saturated sub grade is into the gap between the shear wall and the ground. The subgrade will then be distributed evenly in layers of 200mm. Water will be poured again to increase saturation and then stress will be applied using a pneumatic load frame to reduce the voids. And hence the bearing capacity of soil is increased. Two layers of insulation are applied onto the shear wall to prevent water seepage and hence increase the life of the wall. #civilengineering #geotechnicalengineering
