Would it surprise you to learn that there more than 130,000 people trapped in slavery in the UK today, according to estimates? I found the figure startling when I first came across it. How could human suffering exist on such a scale in today’s world, when the transatlantic slave trade has long been abolished? Modern slavery is an umbrella term for activities involved when one person obtains or holds another person in compelled service. It can include human trafficking, forced labour, child exploitation, forced and early marriage, domestic servitude, and sexual exploitation.  The charity Unseen UK is doing phenomenal work providing safehouses and support in the community for survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking. It also runs the UK modern slavery and exploitation helpline and works with communities, businesses, governments and statutory agencies to stamp out slavery for good. That’s why I am privileged to have recently started as Unseen’s new head of communications. It’s always a steep learning curve starting a new job. My priority is to listen and learn so that I can lead. I’m excited about the opportunity to work for a dynamic charity that’s highly respected for its expertise and impact – Unseen was featured on the front page of yesterday’s edition of The Guardian (link in comments). This is absolutely SICK We are getting media reports about how State and Faith based agencies abused children and youth via the Royal Commission and now some really horrid people have laced lollies with meth and donated them to city missions to share to vulnerable families To use lollies means that those horrid people TARGETTED OUR CHILDREN Consider this People of the public TARGET the VULNERABLE ESPECIALLY CHILDREN WHO abuses children in NZ? They are individual people, This is WHY we have to TARGET INDIVIDUALS who abuse children and STOP wasting time targeting COLLECTIVES like groups and agencies When we target the collective We ABUSE and HARM the people who are doing GOOD WORK like GOOD POLICE GOOD SOCIAL WORKERS GOOD PSYCHIATRISTS GOOD DOCTORS GOOD NURSES GOOD JUDGES GOOD LAWYERS GOOD PRIESTS GOOD NUNS When we target good people doing a good service to the public We ultimately add to the failure of our systems That is why NZ has bad statistics Our children can not TRUST anyone because they don't have the capacity to determine WHO is GOOD to TRUST. https://lnkd.in/gZj_tQkx

Yet another example of #modernslavery in the recruitment sector here in the UK. Was it the workers in the care home who spotted the signs and flagged this? Nope - it was a resident. This says a lot. Time and time again I hear examples first hand from people who work in high risk sectors, not knowing what to do if they spot something that makes them feel uneasy. Very often they know the signs to look out for, the indicators of modern slavery, but don't feel confident to report it. This tends to be the type of thing I hear: 'I thought something dodgy was going on, but didn't want to get anyone in trouble', 'She showed some of the signs and it didn't feel quite right, but I wasn't 100% sure, so didn't report it' 'I don't feel comfortable talking to my line manager about things like this - they'll think I'm sticking my nose in other people's business' Don't just train people on how to #SpotTheSigns - ensure that everyone in your business knows what to do IF they suspect something. Very rarely will anyone be 100% sure that someone is a victim. It usually comes from a gut instinct that something isn't quite right (based on behaviour, appearance, travel arrangements...) Ask your supply chain about this. What are they doing? Empower everyone to be comfortable to report any concerns. Ideally there should be options on how to report - opportunity to report this internally, anonymously if they prefer, or to an external helpline. This should be communicated regularly across the business, in a range of formats - posters, inductions, emails, apps, the list goes on. Then consider what happens next. If something is reported, does your organisation have a #remediation policy in place? Do you, or could you work with charities like Causeway Charity who work with survivors to prevent their re-exploitation, protect them while they recover, and support their progression back into society? From a personal perspective - we all know of people in care homes. Rough sleeping and homelessness are complex issues faced by many cities around the world, including London. It's important to address the underlying causes of homelessness, such as unemployment, mental health issues, addiction and lack of affordable housing. Efforts to combat homelessness usually include a combination of short-term solutions, such as emergency shelters and outreach programs, as well as long-term strategies like providing affordable housing and supporting job training programs. Collaboration between local authorities, non-profit organizations, and community members is crucial to making progress in addressing homelessness. It's also worth noting that addressing homelessness requires not only immediate assistance but also a comprehensive approach that focuses on prevention and social support systems. This involves providing resources to help individuals and families stay in stable housing, access healthcare, and obtain employment opportunities. Ultimately, as a society, we should strive for compassion, understanding, and effective solutions when addressing homelessness.

📢 Urgent Call to Action 📢 Join us and nearly 40 NGOs in urging MPs to stand against the row back of rights for survivors of modern slavery. In 2017, the UK Government promised the Places of Safety scheme – a vital support model that provides survivors with advice, shelter, and medical intervention in the crucial days post-exploitation. After a 6-year wait, this promise has been scrapped along with the pledge to provide survivors with a minimum of 12 months’ support. Without such a scheme, opportunities for identification and survivor support will be missed. This leaves many without the chance to process what they have experienced and make an informed decision about whether accessing support or working with the authorities is right for them.
