Detecting environmental crimes from space 🕵️ Did you know that our core technology can also be applied to other use cases than monitoring critical infrastructure? Together with our partners S[&]T and 52impact, we are using our state of the art earth observation technology to detect the illegal movement and use of contaminated waste or soil. By combining satellite data and Machine Learning algorithms, we provide crucial insights into the amount and nature of the material moved to address environmental crimes. 🌍 Environmental crimes pose serious threats to public health and the environment. We are proud to participate in this collaboration, as it perfectly aligns with our values of supporting sustainability and a healthy environment. 🌱 #EnvironmentalProtection #SatelliteMonitoring #Sustainability

Check out this post from my colleague Cassidy Rankine, PhD who clearly, and visually demonstrates how #PlanetScope imagery can enhance confidence levels in decision-making compared to using Sentinel2 imagery alone, particularly when it comes to Broad Area Management of landscapes.
"We don't need Planetscope, we already use Sentinel imagery" This is a very common sentiment I hear when speaking with folks in the #gis and #remotesensing world. They get so entrenched in the open source data they haven't ever worked with commercial satellite imagery like #planetscope. At first glance we might think a 3m pixel is not too different from a 10m pixel when it comes to landscape remote sensing, modelling and monitoring...but the difference can be worlds apart. Here is my attempt at a brief explainer video comparing what information you miss with a 10m imagery grid vs a 3m grid. When it comes down to detecting and quantifying the things that matter to your business or to the public (eg. post fire tree mortality), resolution matters. You can't manage what you can't measure #geoint #confidencematters #decisionsupport #worksmarternotharder #seetheforestandthetrees

Precision Ag CEO @ GeoPard Agriculture | Precision Agriculture | Software Engineering | API | Automation | Sustainability
A Great post & video from Cassidy Rankine, PhD. Please check my detailed comment. I believe it's necessary to share such insights to lessen information asymmetry. The comment below is from agtech POV, but it's applicable to adjacent niches as well (forestry, change detection). The visual comparison of Sentinel-2 and PlanetScope in GeoPard is in the first comment. ---- It depends on the industry, use case, and ROI ($$). Temporal resolution Sentinel just launched a third satellite and we already receive images every third day (every 5 days in the past). So, the difference is not that big now, but there are clouds and the Planet is helpful when there is pressure to create a map based on the latest image (image every 2 days). Spatial Resolution Raw data from both providers is not usable for agriculture and must be processed. As part of this processing, it could also be upsampled & contrast stretched for the AOI (see screenshot example). Also, during the processing images from various providers should be normalized (a bit related to what Nathan Faleide mentioned above), bands values vary, but with data science, it is normalized (at least we do that, many don't do, and then can provide change detection or accurate time-series analysis). ROI Sentinel-2 is not free for real usage ( take into account the processing mentioned above). Planet has higher costs per sq m, unit economics is tough in bigger areas. Landsat Landsat 8 and 9 provide an image every 8 days (16 days from each satellite). Data is helpful for agriculture (deep history from 1988 and OK imagery for monitoring and VRA). Bands For some use cases, such as calculating moisture NDMI, a SWIR (short-wave-infrared) is required. For irrigation decisions, Sentinel-2 provides this data, while it is not available in PlanetScope. Join us in celebrating our collaborations with OroraTech! 🌟 🛰️ In 2022, we partnered to launch the FOREST-1 (Forest Observation and Recognition Experimental Smallsat Thermal Detector) #Satellite, marking the beginning of a #Constellation dedicated to tracking and monitoring #Wildfires and providing thermal data intelligence. Initially intended as a technology demonstration, FOREST-1 surpassed all expectations and proved to be an outstanding temperature monitoring instrument for industries like forestry, agriculture, energy, and insurance. With the success of FOREST-1, OroraTech has introduced an even more impressive sensor with higher resolution, upgraded processing, and faster detection speed – FOREST-2, successfully launched into orbit on Spire satellite bus in June 2023. This advanced satellite expanded OroraTech’s thermal intelligence detection and wildfire monitoring capabilities, incorporating updated features and technologies. As a next step, OroraTech has chosen Spire to build, launch and operate an eight-satellite constellation dedicated to global temperature monitoring. Each spacecraft in the eight-satellite constellation will carry OroraTech’s proprietary thermal-infrared optical payload and data processing unit with on-orbit fire detection capability. Once operational, it will represent the first and largest constellation of satellites dedicated to tracking and monitoring wildfires! 🤝 Our partnership is a testament to Spire’s strong track record of demonstrating and delivering the benefits that space can bring to life on Earth. With 600+ years of flight heritage, at Spire we aim to continue enabling OroraTech with the space infrastructure needed for thermal data intelligence detection, allowing them to focus on their core expertise while we handle the intricacies of handling space infrastructure. #SatelliteTech #SpaceTechnology #Collaboration
