Thanks to Sarah Brookes for provoking a discussion that is long overdue and needs to be had. Rotto should just about be the jewel in WA's crown. If we're honest, we know it's far off that mark. Among many problems: premium prices for non-premium experiences (or at least better value alternatives at home and abroad), poor infrastructure and a characteristic 'lock it up' attitude. Case in point, here are some gems from what is a fairly bland Rottnest Island Management Plan, published three months ago. "RIA is a public non-financial corporation that is required to be self-funding in relation to its commercial operations." The Rotto Toll - if you're travelling by ferry - makes up a significant chunk of the ferry ticket price. How can you charge so much for so little in return? "(t)he completion of Samphire Rottnest... marked the second significant development on the island in 30 years." "With the recent closure of the Governor's Sports Bar..." It also states the golf course and surrounds need a capital injection. I'm no marine or maritime expert, but it's ironic that as the northern suburbs gets another marina wedged in reasonable proximity to two others, the one place in Perth that needs one doesn't seem to have great onshore boating infrastructure at all. People say we don't want Rottnest to become 'a rich person's playground.' But that's what it currently is. Letting the weeds grow is not conservation. It's high time WA started using it's natural assets better.
Lord, Howe this island has taken a very different path to Rottnest

NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is to be congratulated on this thoughtful Discussion Paper and opportunity to comment on short-term letting. Housing and property ownership are not simple issues, and we need opportunities to think deeply and critically about the right solutions. Housing is not an optional consumer item. It is a basic necessity for survival and a decent life. #housing #housingcrisis #shorttermrentals #housingsupply #property #propertyinvestment

Joined up tourism industry planning is sadly lacking in Wales. County councils, government departments and public bodies, such as Natural Resources Wales who own Coed y Brenin, have an eye on their locality, area of operation or management legacy and seem not to chat with each other and so develop long lasting gains for Wales. While Scotland has reached peak tourism Wales is in decline. That's all the evidence that you need... Solution? Remove the funding for tourism promotion in Wales from the authorities and allow the operators to manage the pot, through four regional associations. This would result in massive savings to the taxpayer, quality destination portals and proposals such as the closure of Coed y Brenin never seeing the light of day...
Filling gaps locally, with business support, sales outsourcing, business development, revenue recovery, problem solving, and genuinely helping companies in their time of need and change.
https://lnkd.in/e6yPWn2J How on earth is this even a consideration? OK, budget cuts and cost reviews yes, but what about the wider appeal of these venues? Wales 🏴 need tourism, Wales 🏴 needs visitors, hospitality in Wales 🏴 needs help. Mountain Biking and outdoor activities are a massive USP for Wales 🏴, let’s embrace it, and while we are at it, scrap the bloody tourist tax idea! Do Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales just not like mountain bikers 🚵? #wales #tourism #visit #mtb #outdoor #hospitality
Coed y Brenin, the UK’s original trail centre, could close this year after a spending squeeze, with the fate of its famous trails in limbo

Proud to be an "official" member of the San Diego Tourism Authority and I seek to bring attention and revenue to businesses that are typically underserved and overlooked. I am also blessed to work with a cohort of former and current members who are highly ambitious and have similar goals. Tourism is the second largest segment of San Diego's economy and employs approximately 214,000 people. It is vitally important to the economic health of the region. The San Diego Tourism Authority is a private, non-profit, mutual benefit corporation composed of approximately 1,000 member organizations, businesses, local governments, and individuals seeking a better community through the visitor industry. San Diego Tourism Authority members include tourism-related entities in such categories as lodging, dining, arts, attractions, shopping, and transportation, among others, as well as other companies indirectly involved in tourism. As a sales and marketing organization, the main objective of the San Diego Tourism Authority is to promote and market the San Diego region as a preferred vacation and meeting destination. The San Diego Tourism Authority also represents and supports the interests of the visitor industry as a whole. The majority of funding received by the San Diego Tourism Authority is derived from San Diego Tourism Marketing District Assessment Funds. Lodging businesses in the District raise these funds through self-assessments to promote tourism in the San Diego region. The San Diego Tourism Authority also receives financial support from member dues and promotional assistance from the membership through donated in-kind services. #tourism #sandiegotourism #sdta #newcohort #cohort #smallbusiness #revenuegrowth #lodging #hotels #sandiego
