The recent PolicyLink Summit raised the bar for conferences. The theme of the Summit was “a revolution of the soul” and it filled my soul with a clear-eyed hope and optimism. They had performances by Janelle Monae, and the Morehouse Marching Band, provocative speakers like  Nikole Hannah Jones, Isabel Wilkerson, and Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and a "Soul Shop" with free swag. At one point Hannah-Jones noted, “We can’t make America great again, but we can make America great.”    During one session Gretchen Barton of Worth Strategy Group, and Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners, noted that cynicism is a massive barrier for people and it is showing up as the belief that the government isn’t working and possibly can’t work to deliver what we need and that the government is working as it was designed to.   This creates “imagination gaps” that are currently serving as barriers preventing people from buying into the idea that our government can and should work for all of us. That’s one of the biggest challenges we face: getting people to believe that we deserve and can have a government that works for all. It’s critical that we help people to see what’s possible so that we can break through the cynicism that weighs on too many of us so that we can create the world we want to live in.
