#Autism is not a mental health issue but a neurotype, yet this hits home HARD. Most autistic adults today have been traumatized as result of relentless gaslighting in early life. By the time we have reached adulthood, we have often become totally lost to ourselves due to having been told for some 20 years by just about everyone around us that our feelings, perceptions and experiences are "wrong" or something totally different from what they have actually been. Strong sensations -even pain- have been dismissed as "nothing" or "can't be", observations brought to us by our keen senses have been ignored or called "impossible", exhausting situations have been called "fun" and something that "everyone wants and likes". Endure this systematically for twenty or so years, by our (presumed) peers, educators and family members, and see if you haven't developed trauma induced alexithymia or even dissociation. The only positive aspect I can think of it is, that since these trauma reactions are not part of autism (even though many experts believe otherwise), recovery is possible if one manages to find supportive and kind environment. Sadly, many of us never get this opportunity and suffer accordingly throughout their whole lives. Most people who have gaslighted us have meant no harm. Most people simply find it really difficult to believe in existence of Takiwatanga, the reality as it presents itself to #ActuallyAutistic people. Their difficulty to understand us and empathize with us and resulting inability accept our experience as valid has been genuine. That is why it is so very important for autistic people to educate people about autistic experience and sensory sensitivity. When people know, that it is humanly possible to experience, feel and perceive things in autism typical ways, they are also better equipped to encounter, accept and support autists. Ignorance causes rejection and gaslighting, rejection and gaslighting cause trauma and great suffering. Knowledge brings light (=kaiao in Hawaiian).

Regardless of how troubled we may feel on any given day, gotta manifest that eternal sunshine of our beautiful minds, especially on social media ... What's civilian 'game face' got to do with the navy and facility dogs like Capt. Demo? Everything. We all wear 'game face.' And often we can't find the words, or just don't want to talk about what lies beneath. But with Capt. Demo, no one - warrior sailors included - needs to find the words to explain why they feel down, no need to articulate how being away from their loved ones for 5.5 straight months - under a crushing operational tempo with more or less daily attacks - is affecting them. Dogs, like many other creatures, can feel our pain, and although they may not be able to speak, they are masters at offering unconditional understanding and comfort. This silent comfort is exactly what makes therapy dogs so special - providing solace in ways words cannot. Animals, particularly therapy or facility dogs, serve as bridges to healing and understanding in environments often marked by stoicism and resilience. In the military context, where expressing vulnerability can be challenging, the presence of a dog like Capt. Demo provides a safe, judgement-free avenue for emotional expression and relief. These dogs don't require the articulation of feelings; their instinctive empathy and presence alone can be a solace, underscoring the therapeutic power of non-verbal communication and companionship, even if it comes wrapped in four paws and a tail. 'Game face' is a universal experience. Therapy dogs like Capt.
