I am pleased to share that the first chapter of my undergraduate dissertation was recently published in the Southampton Journal of Undergraduate History! The chapter focuses on housing for LGBTQ+ people in 1987 - the year with the highest rate of AIDS infections in the UK, which coincided with a rising tide of discrimination against Queer people. It features both qualitative and quantitative studies of the advertisement sections of several Queer-focused publications, in order to understand their impact of these magazines on protecting LGBTQ+ people from homelessness, whilst also trying to understand which groups were best catered to. The potential for exploitation is also highlighted, though this was always in a minority of cases. The chapter concludes that these magazines were largely successful in protecting LGBTQIA+ people, providing an important safety net to some of the most vulnerable in contemporary society. It is hoped that this analysis helps to demonstrate the importance of community-strength historically, and, in doing so, encouraging modern Queer people to unite in the face of increasing rates of hate crimes related to sexuality. LWV advocates for queer liberation by declaring that full rights to our identity are fundamental to real democracy. Queer Americans living their truth are an unimpeachable part of this country's promise to be by the people and for the people. Democracy includes everyone, and that's exactly what Pride is all about. On National Coming Out Day (Oct 11), we reflect on the importance of visibility and the systemic barriers that affect the queer community. In Sydney McNeill’s (they/them) latest article titled “National Coming Out Day: Holding Systems Accountable and Coming Out Late”, they explore the need to move beyond empty encouragements to “come out” and reflect on their own coming out journey. It's a reminder that coming out is personal, and that we all have an accountability to make it safe to come out. https://lnkd.in/gVz4gYpR

I stopped by CHANGE Philanthropy’s Unity Summit this week to join the Funding Queer Liberation panel discussion. I spoke about coming of age and organizing during the militarization of ICE post 9/11, the ways that immigrants have been criminalized in the US, and how the framework of criminalization is helping me make sense of the chaos from all the attacks on trans and queer lives. We must see these attacks for what they are: efforts to undermine the growing political power of LGBTQ+ people, People of Color, and the New American Majority. We cannot get to Liberation without having the clarity that this is about power. Philanthropy — here is my homework assignment for you: 1. Invest in orgs driving a new imagination for LGBTQ+ people through ACTIVE, year-round base-building, power building, and narrative change. 2. Structure funds for both long term and rapid response grants so frontline organizations do not have to make impossible calls around short term defense and long term power building. 3. Funding at the intersections - which means also funding the new, growing formations of Queer and Trans-led groups that may not fall into what people see as traditionally LGBTQ work. #unitysummit2023 #changephilanthropy #fundingqueerlib #lgbtq #immigration
