Although the traditional gift at the start of the Lunar New Year is an envelope with money in it (in Taiwan, at least), I’m thrilled that my book #EverydayDemocracy received such a warm review in the #HongKong Sunday Ming Pao paper, just in time for the start of the Year of the Snake! When I researched and then wrote the book (Thanks Columbia University Press!), I did not have Hong Kong in mind. To me, HK had long been a place where people had an assumption of basic human rights, freedoms (of association, speech, the press), and enjoyed some semblance of democratic practice in politics. It was, in many ways, quite distinctive from mainland #China. Sunfai’s very thoughtful review invites HK readers to consider what lessons - or even inspiration - they might draw from the experiences of young, self-organized volunteers across the border, in southern (mainland) China. I’m not sure what they’ll take away from it, but I’ll be keen to hear from readers there (and elsewhere). I particularly like Sunfai’s translation of Everyday Democracy as “民主日常“。 I have long had in my head, “日常民主“. But on reflection, I think both work! The former I feel refers more to the broader cultural system of democracy; the latter is more (perhaps) about the everyday practices of democracy. Maybe in a future translated version I’ll combine them as “民主日常,日常民主“ which could be interpreted as an exhortation to bring democratic practice into one’s daily life and thus create the broader democratic society that one wishes to see. The review is captured (and readable) on Sunfai’s blog, at: https://lnkd.in/eKQpQh6E The original posting on the Mingpao website is here, but open to subscribers only: https://lnkd.in/ejUJAUtx

In this Off The Page podcast episode, host Samee Siddiqui and author Jessica Namakkal discuss UNSETTLING UTOPIA. Challenging conventional markers of the boundaries of the colonial era as well as nationalist narratives, this book sheds new light on the legacies of colonialism and offers bold thinking on what decolonization might yet mean. https://buff.ly/4hxEr59 #FrenchIndia #FrenchEmpire #IndoFrenchHistory #ColonialIndia #IndianOceanHistory #Postcolonialism #DecolonialThought #BeyondDecolonization #ColonialContinuities #GlobalSouth #SubalternStudies#HistoryBooks #AcademicReads #Historian #HistoryScholars #HistoryLovers #HistoryNerd #HistoryBuff #HistoryGeek #ListenUP #Podcast
