Chinese firm #PANG buys four new television frequencies. It now has 129 assigned frequencies, an increase from 125, extending its lead as the broadcaster with the highest number of frequencies in the country.
Meanwhile, its competitors – Africa Digital Network (AND), GOtv Kenya, Lancia Digital Broadcasting and Signet Signal Distributors – remained with 38, 61, 14 and 120 frequencies respectively.
China’s StarTimes China Africa Digital TV Media Ltd owns a 93.75 percent stake in PANG, with Excel Magic owning a share of 6.25 percent.
StarTimes was founded in China in 1988 but launched in #Africa in 2008, raising competition in a market dominated by leading networks such as MultiChoice Group, which provides DStv and #GOtv.
StarTimes Kenya has been trying to increase its viewership in recent years with expansion of its content offerings including sports, reality, movies, kids shows, business and news.
I was puzzled by PANG’s move to invest in new television frequencies. While I am no TV guru, it got me thinking. Isn't streaming the future of TV?
After all, viewers are increasingly watching TV online, driven by the widespread adoption of high-speed internet, a variety of smart devices, and new ways to consume content.
In the UK, for instance, the average person spent 25% less time watching broadcast TV daily in 2023 compared to 2018, according to OFCM. This trend is expected to continue. Watching scheduled TV channels through digital TV and satellite is predicted to drop to 35% by 2034 and 27% by 2040.
However, there are a few reasons why Pang's decision might be a smart strategic move:
📺 Although traditional TV viewing is declining in the long run, acquiring more frequencies allows PANG to capitalize on the still-substantial market. This could boost their position and profits in the short to medium term.
📺 Having many frequencies can give PANG negotiating power with content providers, advertisers, and potential partners. They can use this to get better deals and stay competitive as the industry transforms.
📺 Owning many frequencies and having a strong presence in the traditional TV market, can keep their brand well-known. This brand equity can come in handy when they launch new services or jump into streaming.
📺 Although traditional TV's long-term prospects may be dim, owning many frequencies provides PANG with a valuable and scarce asset. These frequencies could be sold, leased, or repurposed for new services in the future.
So, my takeaway from the sidelines? While it's important to keep an eye on the long-term trends and adapt, it's just as crucial not to miss out on the opportunities right in front of us.
What is your take?

Industry associations, IBDF and IAMAI have teamed up once again urging to keep OTT players outside the regulatory ambit of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. They have written to the regulator arguing that there is no need to bring OTT channels under the regulatory ambit of a broadcasting system and thus be under TRAI’s regulation. These comments came as submissions to the consultation process for National Broadcasting Policy that TRAI is currently in the process of drafting.
The Ministry of Communications has been trying to bring digital companies under its ambit.

Pan Africa Network Group (PANG), backed by China's StarTimes, secures four new TV broadcasting frequencies from Kenya's Communications Authority, expanding its coverage nationwide. With 129 frequencies now under its belt, PANG solidifies its position as the leading broadcaster in Kenya, surpassing its competitors in frequency ownership.
StarTimes' acquisition of additional frequencies aligns with its strategy to enhance viewership and content offerings in Kenya's competitive broadcasting landscape. Since its launch in Africa in 2008, StarTimes has diversified its content portfolio, offering a wide range of programming including sports, reality shows, movies, and news, challenging established networks like MultiChoice Group's DStv and GOtv.
The move to bolster digital terrestrial television (DTT) frequencies comes as Kenya's broadcasting landscape continues to evolve, with DTT remaining the preferred platform for subscription services. Approximately 4.48 million Kenyans have subscribed to DTT services, representing 70.4% of total broadcasting subscriptions, highlighting the platform's popularity and accessibility.
Despite the growing popularity of DTT, Kenyan consumers face challenges such as rising subscription costs, exacerbated by currency fluctuations. Multichoice Kenya, for example, recently raised DStv prices by 6%, impacting households and businesses. As the broadcasting industry adapts to technological advancements and market dynamics, partnerships and frequency acquisitions play a crucial role in shaping the future of television in Kenya.
