As a nurse who has worked both staff and travel pre and post-COVID, the requests from the striking nurses are reasonable. We need more nursing staff and if the hospital offers better compensation, people might stay. Nurses leave to travel because, real life quote "If I am going to deal with this here, I might as well get paid more somewhere else to deal with it" In conversations about "travel nurses" it is assumed that the nurse is getting the exact billing rate that the agency charges. If an agency bills $139/hour they only offer the traveler a fraction to the nurse. Contract rates have significantly decreased since late 2022 and continue to trend down, hence the mass exodus to equally or more profitable non-bedside roles. The workload and impact on the nurse are not worth the pay in this economy or their mental health. There is a reason staffing agencies have ridiculously multiplied over the years. The travel nurse is making more, yes, however, that includes housing, transportation, private insurance, and more. This is no excuse. I am suggesting that if hospital stops being short-sighted, and invest in their core staff, retention and in turn ratio will improve. On the other hand, if they insist on hiring temporary staff, they should consider working directly with nurses and making fair offers to match the investment to "travel" to your facility. #HealthcareStaffing #NursingRetention #Hospital

An oldie but still relevant ------------------------ While travel nurses help improve shift staffing, it is also disheartening to work next to them. They make up to 3 times as much money as a staff nurse for doing the same work. Besides making so much more, travel nurses are helping to cover the symptoms of mistreatment of nurses by hospitals. Nurses are leaving the hospital because of a lack of pay for the unsafe working conditions they are expected to perform in. These nurses still need a paycheck so they go to travel agencies and start working for 3 times the pay at a neighboring hospital. Hospitals are willing to pay travel nurses more during a staffing crisis because it is short-term. Once the staffing crisis is corrected, they can eliminate that extra cost by reducing travel nurses. If they pay their staff nurses more during staffing crisis’ they can’t take that pay back down. Travel nurses are speaking with their feet. Nurses leaving their staffing position to work for travel agencies for more pay is economics – you don’t pay me for the work I do, I’ll go somewhere that does. These are my sisters and brothers who I saw crying at the nurses’ station from the stress of staff nursing positions. Now they are at least being recognized for their economic potential. They deserve every penny of it! https://lnkd.in/e9BJ82E2

Why would staff nurses quit their stable jobs to become travel nurses? They don’t just do it for the money (although their median pay is 35% higher). Nurses interviewed by researcher Ivan Gan for a new study welcomed the increased autonomy, freedom to explore new cities, learning how other hospitals do things and in general an effort to combat burnout. All in all, this research supports a widely reported trend: More Americans have temporary jobs and freelance employment than before. https://lnkd.in/gFKU637v #Nursing #Healthcare #Hospitals
Many travel nurses opt for temporary assignments because of the autonomy and opportunities − not just the big boost in pay
