It might shock people to learn that it costs more than $350,000 each year to operate our markets. From permit fees to portalet rentals, market expenses aren’t exactly the most exciting things to talk about; but the costs are significant for a market of our scale. To keep the market affordable for small-scale, local farmers, vendor fees cover only half of the costs to operate the market. Remaining expenses are funded through charitable contributions made by community members like you. We just learned we will be able to open our markets a month early — but we need your help to make it happen. By fostering community engagement and embracing innovative solutions, we can make a significant impact. Exciting news from Northeastern Pennsylvania! 📢📢📢 We've introduced 4 new markets to support local farmers, including farm-to-nonprofit, farm-to-community stands in food apartheid areas, farm-to-school produce stands 📚📚📚, and farm-to-retail in low-income communities. 🛒🛒🛒 This initiative doesn't involve warehousing or complex logistics, leading to reduced food loss on farms and increased profits for farmers. In a recent success story, 300lbs of freshly harvested broccoli 🥦🥦🥦 was prevented from going to waste, breaking the cycle of farmers feeling obligated to donate their produce. The food industry is a complex, global network of diverse businesses that supplies most of the food consumed by the world's population. The food industry today has become highly diversified, with manufacturing ranging from small, traditional, family-run activities that are highly labour-intensive, to large, capital-intensive and highly mechanized industrial processes. Many food industries depend almost entirely on local agriculture, animal farms, produce, and/or fishing. The food industry has a large influence on consumerism. Organizations, such as The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), have been criticized for accepting monetary donations from companies within the food industry, such as Coca-Cola.These donations have been criticized for creating a conflict of interest and favoring an interest such as financial gains. #snsinstitutions #designthinking #designthinkers

As someone passionate about food security, I was alarmed when a national leader in food rescue said to me, “If we pay farmers, they will expect to be paid.” 🧐🤨😱 This statement highlights a critical issue in food sustainability ——->>>> the donation-based model of the charitable food system. That's why I am teaming up with a Pennsylvania farmer to educate her colleagues on food equity for the farmer. Our workshop session title: “Food Dignity: Get Paid to Fight Hunger." It's crucial that we recognize the value of farmers' hard work and compensate them appropriately.
