712 More to go to reach 20,000 signatures in one year for Vancouver Island Rail. Please hop aboard! https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr Back in March Chek news reported Canada's Transportation Minister Pablo Rodriquez's response to the petition that went to the House of Commons with 7610 signatures on the 7th of February 2024, "As a registered Canadian Charity, the Island Corridor Foundation continues to engage with Canada in advancing its core mandate – preserving and using the rail corridor. The Province of British Columbia also provided $18 million in Spring 2022 to support community and Indigenous engagement on the future of the Corridor. This work is ongoing. Canada continues to engage with the province regularly and at different levels on transportation priorities." Believe me, there's been significant developments locally since then! The Snaw-Naw-As First Nation returned to the board of directors of the Island Corridor Foundation, and all the other seats filled back up too including First Nations. The ICF has a new CEO, and filled a newly created Project Manager position. 3 working groups are reportedly "very dynamic" and are hard at it with some heavy dialog and updating the business case as they go along. They are leveraging the expertise of consultants and contractors, so we're all hoping for good outcomes! As a bonus, Port Alberni's tourist excursion train run by Alberni Pacific Railway is back in action! I hear they are getting a longer run soon too. https://lnkd.in/gKR3tEMg Through unity and the numbers to back it up, we might just come out of all this on top, with trails and trains and the many connected things that will benefit all Vancouver Islanders. If you haven't signed yet please do, and please share it too! https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr All Aboard! Haiti is currently navigating through significant political and economic difficulties, particularly centred around the capital Port-au-Prince. 🌍 The recent geo-political challenges have only added to the complexity of the situation, placing immense strain on communities across the nation. Amidst these challenges, it’s crucial for us to extend our unwavering support to the resilient people of Haiti and the local partners who are tirelessly working to uplift their communities. 💚 In these critical moments, our support must encompass more than just planting trees. While initiatives like ours are essential, it’s equally vital to focus on creating job opportunities and stability for the locals. Additionally, providing access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure are integral aspects of ensuring sustainable growth and resilience in the region. We’re delighted of the work our local partners, Fondation Bonne Recolte and Harvest Craft have been doing. We’re supporting an ongoing initiative now for multiple years dedicated to restoring and safeguarding crucial mangrove ecosystems & farms in south part of the island. 🏝 This initiative not only involves planting a diverse range of native species, including Rizafora and Agifernia Germinaz, in East Aquin but also emphasises community engagement and empowerment. #SupportHaiti #CommunityResilience #TreeAppInitiative

⚖ How can tourism revenues be shared equitably within the community? 🏡 Since 2015, People and the Sea has set up an independent association: the Inato Homestays, whose aim is to improve the economic resilience of coastal communities by sharing the benefits of tourism more equitably. How does it work? Eighteen homestays offer rooms for rent to the tourists. The objective is a cultural exchange and a complete immersion in Filipino life. What's more, part of the money raised is invested in a community seed fund to cover any work, improvements and repairs in the house. What are the results? Households participating in Inato Homestays have seen their income rise by an average of 600 euros per year. This corresponds to an income increase of 30%. Why ? We need to strengthen the economic resilience of costal communities - to empower them with the ability to better manage their own fate, and to better defend themselves against future shocks. https://lnkd.in/gkUf5cpa
